Dog suddenly kicks leg when belly touched. Is it skin sensitivity?

Since this is so out of character for him he certainly could be injured. If a dog is hurting in a specific spot, they will sometimes becomes hypersensitive in that area. They will sometimes become aggressive. I would have your vet take a look at him. Your vet will be able to localize the pain and start him on pain meds if needed. You may also have to put him in a short course of anti-anxiety meds until he feels better. Your vet will also be able to do X-rays if needed. I hope this helps!

It sounds like Scooter is very itchy! There are many reasons he could be itchy including fleas, food allergy, environmental allergy or thyroid issues. Make sure he is on a good flea product (oral products such as Comfortis and Simparica are best). Otherwise, talk to your vet about next steps regarding allergies. If Scooter seems very itchy, the doctor can prescribe medications such as Apoquel which can help. I hope he feels better soon!

Chronic skin lesions could be several things including allergies to fleas, allergies to something in the environment, food allergy or endocrine disease. Each one of these problems is detected and addressed differently and I recommend to discuss with your veterinarian which one to start hunting down first. Parasites are often ruled out with an oral medication like Simparica. Food allergy is best ruled out with a diet trial using a hydrolyzed protein. Endocrine diseases are detected with blood work. Environmental allergies are a little more difficult to detect but a response to therapy or a blood test can give an indication. Once you figure out and address the underlying cause, the lesions should not come back. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Also protect the area from trauma by having Sammy wear an elizabethan collar at all times. For whatever reason puppies just tend to be itchier and scratch more often than adult dogs. If his skin looks 100% normal where he's been itchy it may not be anything to be concerned about. If you notice him scratching his ears, if there are red spots or hair loss on his belly, or if he seems so itchy that he isn't comfortable you may want to see your vet for an exam.

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

It is unusual for a food allergy to only affect one area and there may be an underlying trigger or painful focus in the area which should be excluded by your vet, compulsive behaviors can also develop but would improve with an e collar and changes in routine such as additional walks, activities and chew toys to distract him. Food sensitivities are best ruled out by a 6week food trial on a hydrolyzed diet such as royal canin hypoallergenic, symptoms would then recur if you rechallenge with the original foods

You will need to take your dog to a veterinarian for a skin exam. Your dog could be suffering from an allergy, mites, fleas, a bacterial or fungal infection. each of these requires a different treatment, so it is important to find out what is causing the itch. Your vet will do a thorough exam and maybe a a skin scrape. He will then discuss the options with you and then prescribe medications, possibly give an injection to stop the itching.
