Why does my dog constantly lick his belly and his leg jerks when I rub it?

Sounds like Jack has skin allergies or what we refer to as atopy in dogs. As far as the licking and scooting, he may have an anal sac infection or inflammation. You need to have your veterinarian check his anal glands and discuss referral to a veterinary dermatologist for intradermal skin testing. The skin test determines exactly what Jack is allergic to and allows your veterinarian to formulate a vaccine that can treat him long term,. The goal here is to prevent chronic or recurring skin infections.

For whatever reason puppies just tend to be itchier and scratch more often than adult dogs. If his skin looks 100% normal where he's been itchy it may not be anything to be concerned about. If you notice him scratching his ears, if there are red spots or hair loss on his belly, or if he seems so itchy that he isn't comfortable you may want to see your vet for an exam.

The allergy can be to something in their food (usually the protein) or they can have environmental allergies to things like grasses and pollens. These dogs usually benefit from a special diet and an anti itch medication like Apoquel or Cytopoint. These medications help block the itch sensation so the dog stops itching. Toby's allergies look pretty severe based on the pictures you loaded. So I would recommend talking to your vet about getting him started on one of the medications mentioned above to help give him some relief.

He needs to be seen by your veterinarian so they can assess him. This is most likely a bacterial skin infection from allergies, external parasites (fleas, ticks, mites), fungal/yeast infection, among other causes. Your vet can examine him and discuss a diagnostic/treatment plan for Jerod. Treatment may involve oral antibiotics, anti-itch medicines, Elizabethan collar to prevent licking, etc. Good luck

If Frankie has never exhibited this behavior before, it could be a sign of skin sensitivity which could be due to several things including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, or other possible causes. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Check the skin daily for signs of infection or irritation such as redness or scabs. Hello, sorry to hear about Scooter. It appears that he has a superficial skin infection in his inguinal regeion. Causes for this include allergies (food or environment) or fleas most commonly. If Scooter is very itchy, then he is likely making it worse by scratching it. Scooter will likely need allergy medications and antibiotics to treat his skin infection. Additionally, determining if he has environmental allergies, food allergies, or fleas is important as this is the most efficient way to eliminate his scratching.
