My dog has kennel cough. Should I separate her from my vaccinated dog?

Yes, I would have Charley vaccinated as well. The kennel cough vaccine doesn't completely protect against the disease, but it makes the symptoms less severe if the dog gets it. This is because there are a number of different bacteria that can cause kennel cough. Mayzie could still get it, and yes she could bring it home and infect Charley.

Kennel cough is transmitted similarly to the common cold- so with direct contact or by sharing bowls or even by germs transferred from your hands after petting the coughing puppy. So keeping them separately is ideal if feasible, and washing your hands between handling each of them is also advised. Since kennel cough is transmitted by aerosol and direct contact you wound have to keep their kennels very separate (like in different rooms). I am not sure if your frenchie is already being treated , but Kennel cough is often viral and self limiting. But sometimes a cough suppressant or antibiotic is indicated depending on signs. I would watch him closely and have him evaluated (if you haven’t already) if he becomes lethargic, if his appetite decreases, if his respiratory rate is increased or if there is thick nasal discharge. The vaccine does not cover against every kind of organisms that can cause kennel cough, so your dies have a possibility of contracting it. But your dog can only spread it if infected. Just because your was exposed does not mean he is a carrier or contagious to other dogs unless he is showing symptoms

Most often with kennel cough you will hear a dry cough, hacking cough. Kennel cough most often resolves on its own, but if his signs persist, visit your veterinarian for further assessment. Yes , it is possible that Theo can still get kennel cough, even though he was vaccinated. Kennel cough is a respiratory disease complex that can be caused by a large number of various bacteria and viruses. The vaccination only covers Bordetella bronchiseptica, which is the bacterium which is the main cause. So if your dog catches kennel cough he can still get infected with the other bacteria and viruses, but he will be immune against Bordetella. This then usually causes the kennel cough to be milder. Because Theo has a oozing eye I suggest you take him to the vet for an exam. If he has a fever as well and should he have an eye infection he will need antibiotics, If he has a bad cough your vet can also give him some cough medicine. Usually kennel cough is self-limiting and goes away within 3-4 weeks, but sometimes a dog needs medication to help it get over it.
