How important is the kennel cough vaccine if many things cause it?

Most likely if one of your dogs has kennel cough the other dog has already been exposed. Kennel cough is a very general term to describe infectious tracheitis. There can be many causes for kennel cough including mycoplasma which we cannot vaccinate for. I would recommend just monitoring your other dog for any coughing . If you notice coughing I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam. Sometimes certain dogs will not get kennel cough due to stronger immune systems.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The Bordatella vaccine is used to prevent ONE cause of Kennel Cough caused by the bacteria Bordatella Bronchiseptica. Most boarding facilities, doggie day cares and groomers require it as it is contagious between dogs. If Nina goes to these places or goes to dog parks or plays with other dogs a lot then it is recommended to give. It is an elective vaccine though, meaning it is your choice. Living with 5 other dogs is a risk if one of them gets it some where. Kennel cough isn't deadly just annoying to you and the dog because the cough is very loud. Since you started the vaccine I would finish it can decide next year whether you want to continue it. Good luck!

These can occasionally progress to pneumonia if not treated appropriately with antibiotics and supportive care. Other causes of coughing include collapsing trachea, heartworm disease, heart disease, and masses. I recommend having Tator seen by a vet to rule out the conditions above and receive appropriate treatment. In the meantime, I recommend limiting Tator’s activity so that he does not get stressed and using a harness rather than a collar for walks.

This sign could be compatible with an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection. There are different upper respiratory tract infections possible and unfortunately kennel cough is only one (although the most common) of them. Yes, kennel cough is very common and spreads very easily. Pets who receive the vaccine may still get kennel cough (just like people can still get the flu even though they had the vaccine), but they tend to get less sick IF they end up getting the infection. Kennel cough is a respiratory infections that is caused by roughly 9 different organisms. They get it by coming in contact with dogs who are infected or by sniffling an area where a dog who is infected was recently located. So it spreads easily. Treatment is symptomatic with medications to decrease coughing and inflammation. Sometimes antibiotics are indicated but many times the cause is viral so antibiotics won't help. Yes, I would have Charley vaccinated as well. The kennel cough vaccine doesn't completely protect against the disease, but it makes the symptoms less severe if the dog gets it. This is because there are a number of different bacteria that can cause kennel cough. Mayzie could still get it, and yes she could bring it home and infect Charley.
