My dog has kennel cough, coughing mucus. Could it be pneumonia?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 13 years and 3 months old | 78.1 lbs

Bailey has been exposed to kennel cough recently and has had a cough for 3-4 days, sounds like she's trying to bring something up. This AM she expelled some cream coloured mucus. She has been eating well except did not touch her dinner tonight, still gets excited to go on walks but lacks her usual energy. Wondering if this sounds more like pneumonia? Should we be more concerned? Also our other 13 yr old dog is immonuocompromised from prednisone for lung CA, what should we do for her?

I'm sorry Bailey isn't feeling well.

I recommend taking her to a veterinarian tomorrow to have them listen to her. It can be viral or bacterial but if it's viral it can take up to 2 weeks to resolve. If it is bacterial she needs antibiotics.

It may not be pneumonia and she may just be expelling some of the phlegm from the kennel cough.

Regarding your other dog, they were already exposed. If they show any signs then I would immediately take them to your veterinarian.
