My Pomeranian's joints crack, but she's not in pain. Should I worry?

I wonder if Pom Pom might have luxating patellas, which is an inherited problem that causes the kneecap to pop in and out of place. Sometimes a click could come from the hips as well. Even though she doesn’t seem painful it would be best to have your vet examine her - sometimes there are therapies that would be helpful to prevent problems like arthritis later.

He may have early stage hip problems, which is very common in this breed. Cracking is usually a sign of either bone on bone contact or air bubbles in the joint due to reduced synovial fluid. I think its worth having him checked by your vet at some point to evaluate his hips. You can also consider getting him started on joint supplements now to support him as he gets older. This is a condition that can be surgically corrected, and given Rascal's age of 2, this is recommended so that he doesn't develop painful arthritis for the rest of his life. The other possible condition is a 'torn cruciate', and this also can be corrected with surgery. Carprofen is a medication of the class 'NSAIDs'. This are hard on the liver, kidney and gut. It is good for breakthrough pain, however long-term this isn't something you want to continue on. Please discuss with your vet about surgical correction options for Rascal, as well as other options for pain medications longer term (Gabapentin for example). NSAIDs do work best, they just come with high risks of side effects. Best of luck with Rascal, I hope he feels better soon!

Arthritis is definitely a possibility. You could start him on a joint supplement, like Dasuquin and see if that helps. Your vet could also take an x-ray to evaluate for arthritis and then start him on a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, like Deramaxx, Previcox, Rimadyl, etc. NSAIDs help relieve the discomfort associated with arthritis.

Most likely this is arthritis. If he isn't limping then this is aa good indicator that it isn't causing too much pain yet. You can try over the counter joint supplements like Cosequin to help replenish fluid in the joint and also to help slow down the progression of arthritis. If he develops pain or limping then it is best to have the limb radiographed to get a better idea of what is happening internally, and also to get a prescription for stronger medications to help with pain.

If Poncho is lame in one of his legs, he could have an injury ranging from a problem with his toes to something in his shoulder (front leg) or his hips (hind leg). If this is a chronic issue, it is possible Poncho has some arthritis in his joints, which may benefit from a joint supplement. However, if Poncho has a soft tissue injury or something like a fracture or dislocation of any of his bones or joints, a supplement will not help. I recommend restricting Poncho's activity for 3-5 days and see if this helps his lameness. If he is no longer limping on the leg after this rest, this may have just been a soft tissue injury that needed time to heal. If his lameness does not improve or worsens over this time, I recommend having Poncho seen by a veterinarian. He/she can perform a full physical exam and orthopedic exam to localize his pain and determine the best course of treatment. As a reminder, NEVER give dogs pain medication that is intended for humans, as these can be fatally toxic to dogs. I hope this is helpful!

Depending on which leg was affected or if the sound can be localized one specific limb this could be indicative of underlying orthopedic disease/arthritis. Diagnosis of arthritis requires an examination and potentially x-rays of affected limbs. You could try starting Lulu on glucosamine to see if this increases her level of comfort.
