My dog's skin is irritated, itching, and dragging bottom after ticks.

Due to the location it looks like Grumpthy may have fleas. Fleas can be very itchy and in turn create a skin infection. I would recommend flea/tick protection. I would also recommend an appointment with your veterinarian. They could provide a good physical examination to determine if that is what is causing the lesions at the base of his tail. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Running her bum across the ground can be a sign of intestinal worms, but it can also be a sign of impacted anal sacs. Dogs whose bum is itchy or painful will scoot, but if Pocket has only done it once, her anus may have simply be itchy at that time. Should she continue to do it, however, I would take her into the vet to see if her anal sacs need to be expressed. I'm not sure what brands of flea and tick repellent you used, so I can't advise if they are considered a good brand or not, but if the tick is dead, then you know the medication is working. Should you see more ticks and/or fleas, you may not have a good brand of repellent, and I would consider using another brand once this current treatment needs to be reapplied.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear Bam Bam is having some skin problems. Shouldn't be flea or tick related since you have that covered. Skin problems can of course be caused by external parasites including mites, bacteria, fungus, allergies, irritants, etc. Best thing to do is to have Bam Bam evaluated by your vet unless these spots resolve on their own. Your vet can do a physical exam and perform skin tests if necessary (skin scrape, fungal exam, fungal culture, tape prep, cytology, etc) or any other tests to determine what is going on with her skin. Once that is determined, a treatment course can be developed. I hope Bam Bam gets well soon.

Poor Cody! It sounds like he has a bad case of allergies. He could have fleas or allergic to something outside. He may also have mange, secondary yeast or bacterial infection. You could try to give him benadryl twice a day, start giving him calming baths using an anti-itch shampoo like duoxo calming shampoo, and start him on an omega 3 fatty acid to see if there is any improvement. I would also get him on a high quality flea preventative like comfortis, bravecto, or nexgard. See both links below for more info. If he isn't improving or if the area on his booty continues to bleed, I would have your vet look at him. Your vet will be able to determine the cause and get him started on the proper meds to help him feel better. They will also be able to start him on a strong allergy medicine like apoquel, cytopoint, or steroids. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern! Poor Rusty! Ticks are no fun and can be quite painful when in large quantities. I would recommend using a flea and tick preventative such as Frontline, Nexgard or Bravecto. He will likely need a shampoo to help soothe his skin after the ticks die.
