My dog has itchy skin, bumps, and is scratching. What's the cause?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Based on the photos, it appears that Po may have a skin infection. We call this superficial pyoderma. For these, I recommend topical therapy and skin supplementation. If after 10-14 days there is no improvement with this approach, I recommend visiting the veterinarian and having the vet take a look at Po so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Loki. I am glad that he is seeing his veterinarian. He may have a bacterial skin infection. This can happen for a variety of reasons, but allergies are a common cause. Has he been licking the area? This can make it worse. I recommend bathing him with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula to help soothe his skin. Place an E-collar on him if he is licking. A mite or severe allergy are first on my list. Allergies commonly appear at age 2-4 but can develope at any time. If that is the case, they are usually environmental but if you’ve switched food or added a new treat in the last few weeks, that could be a cause too. Finally, new shampoo, change in laundry soap, etc can also cause this to flare up. Treatment varies depending on cause but may include medicated shampoo, or oral medications, and addressing underlying allergies of needed. It is also possible that this is due to mites, ringworm, or an auto-immune problem. Bottom line is, all of these things require a vet visit and prescription medications to treat so head on in as soon as you can. Best of luck to you and Titan!

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively! There is really nothing specific you can try at home other than bathing him with a medicated shampoo you can get at your local pet store. This shampoo should contain chlorehexidine. In reality though, this is unlikely to resolve this issue completely. Good luck and have a good day!

Hi there and thanks for posting! There can be a lot of causes for itching and scratching all over. If it tends to be seasonally in nature, it could be a seasonal related allergy. A flea allergy or flea dermatitis is another possibility here if Odin is not on a good flea preventative. Food allergies may be another cause as well as a bacterial skin infection or a parasitic infection of the skin such as scabies or demodex mites. Glad to hear the Benadryl is working somewhat but I think a good first step here is for Odin to see his veterinarian for a work up on his skin issue. Your vet may start with skin scraping to check for parasitic causes and may recommend a flea preventative if Odin is not on one. Other tests such as an allergy screening or food trials may be recommended to help narrow down a cause. Antibiotics and other anti-itch medications may be prescribed as well to help control symptoms.
