Why is my dog itching, biting skin, has rash & eye discharge?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Titian! The dark thickening of the skin indicates chronic skin disease. It can be from a bacterial or yeast skin infection, demodex (non-contagious skin mite), scabies (infectious skin mite) or even ring worm. I would highly recommend having Titan seen by your Vet next week for an exam. They can do a quick cytology of the surface of the skin to check for bacteria and or yeast and also do a skin scraping to look for mites. Regardless of the cause Titan is obviously uncomfortable. Hi. Poor little Titan. Based on these photos, it appeare he has a skin infection. Pretty moderate. These can be caused by bacteria, yeast, allergies, or parasites. With him being younger, a basic skin infection or parasites/mites are probably the most probable here. Unfortunately there isnt a treatment you can do at home. Especially without a diagnosis. He will beed to be seen to get the correct treatment.

There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Skin issues like you are describing can have a variety of causes, including skin parasites (fleas or mites), allergies, an infection, or an underlying medical issue (Cushings disease, diabetes). I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for his skin lesions, have any necessary testing done (bloodwork, skin scrape, culture) and start on any treatment that he may need. There is really nothing specific you can try at home other than bathing him with a medicated shampoo you can get at your local pet store. This shampoo should contain chlorehexidine. In reality though, this is unlikely to resolve this issue completely. Good luck and have a good day!
