Why is my puppy's skin itchy, scaly, with hair loss and bumps?

This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be fleas or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat Luna with a high quality flea treatment (e.g. advantage), then get her to the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy. Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics). simultaneously you should start her on a prescription hypoallergenic diet for at least 2 months. Hopefully you will see some results after all this, if not you and your vet should consider putting her on a long term allergy treatment (Atopica or Apoquel).

Scrappy needs to go to your veterinarian for an exam and skin scraping to determine the cause of this skin condition. It looks like a bacterial infection but he also could have mites, a fungal infection or it could be an autoimmune disease or tumors. If it's a severe bacterial infection with antibiotics and medicated baths this should improve. The longer he has these lesions the more likely the skin can become damaged and his fur may not grow back in. In addition to the skin scraping they may recommend a thyroid level test and perhaps a blood panel to check for other underlying disease. Poor guy. I would highly recommend asking your vet to perform a skin scrape on Tombo. These lesions are suspicious for possible demodexx mites. The trumectin is a Demodexx treatment; however, you didn't mention that your vet actually tested for this. If this is a mite problem, then a topical medicated shampoo can be used in conjunction with the injections to gain better control of the overpopulation of mites on the skin. Also there are several other products that treat for mites that may be more effective for him, such as the off-label use of Nexgard, Bravecto or Simparica (have to be 6 months or older, so this may be an option depending on his exact birthdate). Also a skin culture should be done to determine which antibiotic will get rid of this infection for a certainty. Most skin infections will respond to broad spectrum antiobitcs, but there can be resistant infections that don't respond, which may be the case with your pet Tombo. This infection doesn't look particularly fungal in nature; however, if your vet already did a skin impression to confirm there is yeast present on the skin, then definitely continue with the Fluconazole treatment as prescribed. These viable tests (skin culture, skin scrape, impression) should give us a good idea on how we should be treating him from here moving forward. As a general rule of thumb, you can give you pet pet formulated fish oils for just about any skin condition in which the skin is red. Fish oils act as a natural anti-inflammatory and can also held with overall skin health. You can find these at your local pet store or through your vet office. I would also inquire with your vet about prescribing some antihistamines to help with any itching that Tombo has right now. Hi. Poor little Titan. Based on these photos, it appeare he has a skin infection. Pretty moderate. These can be caused by bacteria, yeast, allergies, or parasites. With him being younger, a basic skin infection or parasites/mites are probably the most probable here. Unfortunately there isnt a treatment you can do at home. Especially without a diagnosis. He will beed to be seen to get the correct treatment.

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

The most likely cause is the presence of ectoparasites, such as fleas, mites or lice. If he also has areas of raised pus-filled lesions, he also likely has a secondary bacterial infection. It sounds difficult to have Frisco seen by a veterinarian, but he would benefit greatly from an exam and a skin scrape, which is a test used to look for external parasites. Depending on what parasites are present, your vet can treat accordingly. Over-the-counter flea and tick medications are not safe or effective in dogs, and can sometimes be harmful. It does look like Toby's skin is quite irritated! The small bumps could mean that there is bacteria in his skin (also known as pyoderma) and he should see a vet for examination and appropriate medications. However, there is usually an underlying cause for the itching and subsequent infection. The most common causes would be fleas, ticks, mites, or allergies. Allergies can be from a range of things, including flea saliva, food proteins like chicken or beef, or the environment like dust, pollen, mold, or grass. If Toby has a food allergy, he may benefit from a novel protein diet or a prescription dog food for allergies. These are good things to discuss with your vet. While you wait for his appointment, try to prevent Toby from further itching his inflamed skin to prevent further damage. You can cover him with a dog or human shirt or try to put socks on his feet. If he is licking then he may need to wear a cone/e-collar. You can try to use some hydrocortisone cream on the itchy spots, but don't let Toby lick it off!
