Why are my dog's ears itchy with clear liquid? Is it food allergies?

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Hello! And thank you for your question and photos. It looks like Zeus is having a flare up of his allergies, worsened by secondary bacterial infection. It looks severe enough to require antibiotics, so I would recommend going to see your vet. They can perform a microscope test for bacteria or yeast in the ear and between the paws, and from there prescribe the appropriate ear drops and antibiotics, as well as anti-inflammatory allergy medicine. In the meantime, try soaking his feet in a shallow bath of Epsom salts and lukewarm water for 10 minutes twice a day. This will help provide some relief for his irritated feet. I would also use an ear cleaner designed for dogs to gently clean out some of the ear debris, if he will let you. Finally, I would recommend putting an e-collar (cone) on his head to prevent further scratching and licking of his skin. I hope this helps, and that Zeus feels better soon!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Zoey. It is possible that allergies are to blame for her ongoing skin disease especially if her problems are somewhat seasonal. There are two great new allergy medications used to control itching and licking. They are both very effective. Typically if the itching can be controlled and medication such as an antibiotic can be used to treat any secondary infection, the skin will heal. This will take away the odor. The two medications I used most commonly for environmental allergies are Apoquel and Cytopoint. It is important to rule out other allergies such as fleas and diet. She may need a prescription diet trial. I hope this information helps!

There could be an underlying allergy. I recommend that you have Gizmo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! I would recommend having your vet look in to the ear canals with an otoscope. Sometimes there is discharge deeper in the ear canal that can not be seen from the outside. If that is the case the Vet can use a Q-tip safely to remove some of the wax and look under the microscope to see if it is a yeast or bacterial infection. Some dogs will shake and scratch with even mild overgrowth of bacteria or yeast. Otherwise she may just be itchy due to allergies and you can try an antihistamine. See the links below. I recommend purchasing a dog ear cleaner at your pet store and cleaning the discharge from his ears. Put some cleaner on a cotton ball and massage the fluid into the ear canal. Rub it around to loosen the debris and then wipe it out. Take a dry cotton ball to remove any cleaner left in the ear. I clean ears daily to start, then as the discharge decreases then clean only when needed. If Maxo has ear mites or a severe yeast or bacterial ear infection this will help but specific prescription medication will be more effective. When you can take him in to your veterinarian for an ear exam. They will look at the ear discharge under the microscope to determine the cause of the problem. Then they can give him the right medication. Ear medication often contains a drug to stop the itching as well as something to cure the cause of the infection and that would be more effective than just cleaning his ears. Hello! It sounds as if Fergie may be one of those dogs that would benefit from regular weekly ear cleaning for maintenance. In order to confirm a food allergy it takes at least 12 weeks of adhering STRICTLY to the new diet. This means 12 weeks of only the specified food, absolutely no treats or other snacks unless they are the Hill's Z/D treats or the same novel protein. I say that to say that it will take time to see results if a food allergy is the cause. There are other possibilities that could be the cause for the itching and ear infections, but I think diet is a great place to start. Having an itchy dog is hard for all parties involved, but try to hang in there with the food. If things do not seem to be improving certainly after 12 weeks, its time to start investigating other options (i.e. medication, visiting a dermatologist). Hopefully this helps some! Hang in there!
