Ouch! That irritation can be a number of things, including an allergic reaction, injury trying to heal, infection from bacteria, fungus, or yeast, and more. Since it can be so many different things, a vet visit in person is best. It's also a good idea to place an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Alley to keep her from licking and chewing the spot to see if that helps reduce the irritation. Keeping the area clean and dry can also help.

If the spot doesn't seem to look better in 24 hours, worsens, is oozing debris or seems painful/bothersome, or is causing Alley distress, then a vet visit is best to have the area looked at in person and a sample taken to check for the underlying cause. As some fungal infections can also transfer to other pets and people, it's a good idea to wash hands and clothing after handling it as well.

If it doesn't improve significantly in a few days, gets worse, spreads, or if she starts feeling sick or itching, get her an appointment with her vet.

What to do if my dog has a swollen red bump on her bum and licks it?

Poor girl! This could be a number of things from a benign tumor, an infection, a cancerous tumor and much more. I would first put a cone collar on her to prevent her from licking it or it will only get worse. Since the bump is really swollen and obviously bothering her, I would have your vet take a look at it. Your vet will be able to determine what it is and recommend the best treatment for her. They will likely put her on antibiotics and may or may not recommend to have it surgically removed. Dog has itchy bug-bite lumps on inner thigh. What is it and how to help?

While insect bites are possible, another common cause of lesions as we see here is a secondary bacterial infection of the skin resulting in papules, crusts, and pustules which can be very itchy. Oftentimes these dogs need a course of antibiotics and either a steroid or a drug called apoquel to get the inflammation/itch under control. Sometimes the itching may be controlled with an antihistamine such as diphenhydramine, hydroxyzine, or cetirizine under the direction of your veterinarian, but oftentimes initially a steroid or stronger medication is required.

Why is my dog licking a bump on her rear after allergy meds?

It is hard to tell from the picture but it maybe the start of a pustule which can be a sign of a skin infection. It may also be a cyst or sebaceous adenoma or wart as they have a similar looking characteristic. Since she has been through Cytopoint and Apoquel with out much relief, she may benefit from a dermatologist to get intradermal allergy testing. Your vet can check that spot to be sure what it is and set up a referral for the skin if you wish to pursue that route

Worried about my dog's red, hard bump on his inner thigh. What is it?

Hi there. Bumps like the one on Bear could be a few different things. Sometimes there can be a thorn or something else stuck beneath the skin causing the bump. It could also be a skin growth, examples of these are things like epitheliomas, mast cell tumors and lipomas. Because it's red and is causing him some irritation, I would recommend having your veterinarian check the bump. They may suggest doing a fine needle aspirate of the bump, which collects cells from within the bump to help diagnose what it is. It's not an emergency, but I would have it checked when you can. My dog's tail base is red, itchy, and has a bump. What should I do?

It could be an allergic reaction to an insect bite or a traumatic wound. Itchy bumps are almost always allergic in nature however. You can try topical soothing creams (sold at your local pet store) for allergic reactions, and cleaning it with chlorhexidine solution 3% or iodine diluted 50:50 with warm water. This will help some with the inflammation. If it still isn't better after 24-48 hrs then it is best to have your vet take a look at it and potentially give her stronger medications to treat it.
