My dog pees a lot on Hill's SO diet for bladder stones. Is it normal?

Hill’s is great, don’t believe the horror stories. It’s one of the foods I highly recommend. They have veterinary nutritionists on staff to make sure the food is balanced and safe for dogs to eat. I would keep Pepper on this food.

I would suggest that you ask your veterinarian about using Hill's Science Diet W/D. This is a low fat and high fiber diet that is good for diabetic dogs, but is also known to produce a neutral urine ph and may be adequate in preventing the return of her bladder stones. Depending on her individual situation, this may be a possible solution. If a duet change is done, it would be a great idea to periodically check a urine sample to monitor the ph and look for problems.

The prescription diets are formulated to treat for specific disease processes or conditions in pets. They are prescription only because they are not indicated for healthy pets with no issues and therefore need to be regulated, hence the prescription requirement. There isn’t just one specific ingredient in the food that makes it a prescription food per-say. The urinary diets are formulated with added salt, so this is what is causing the increase drinking and urination that your are seeing. This is done on purpose to help dilute the urine so that crystals don’t form. Most pets have to stay on this food lifelong because they are more susceptible to forming crystals and stones. Keep in mind that this may be unrelated to the crystals and can even be something like urinary incontinence. I would continue monitoring for signs of painful urination or bloody urine. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further diagnostics would include abdominal imaging and lab work. It could be that Shiloh is suffering for spay incontinence. This is due to weakening of the muscles of the urethra, and it can be treated medically. IT could also be that she has a UTI or bladder stones. I would have her seen by a vet for this behavior. The vet can diagnose what is causing it, and can prescribe medication to treat it. Please provide some more information on the medications she is on. Incontinence is quite common in females and can be treated medically once complicating factors such as inflammation, infection and stones are ruled out
