Why is my healthy dog incontinent only at night while sleeping?

It could actually be spay incontinence. Lack of estrogen may cause the urethral sphincter (a muscle used to control the exit of urine) to relax and release urine involuntarily. This can be treated with medication. I'd have Coco seen by a vet for this issue.

Some females will develop incontinence after the spay. This does make them more prone to urinary tract infections and I do recommend to have Amber visit her veterinarian. The doctor will check her for a bladder infection and if that is clear they will discuss starting her on a medication to tighten the sphincter. This will likely stop the incontinence. The most likely fluid in a spayed female dog would be urine. When a dog dribbles urine or leaves spots of urine on the bedding I often think about urinary tract infections. Older dogs can also develop urinary sphyncter incompetence (or a weak sphyncter), making it difficult for them to hold their bladder overnight. There are also less common causes, for instance bladder stones or endocrine diseases. Your veterinarian will likely offer to run a urinalysis, a urine culture, and maybe some bloodwork on Sassy to determine what might be causing the urine leaking. There are antibiotics we use for urinary tract infections and if it appears to be loss of bladder control there are medications to help with that as well. A visit to the vet should help you sort out the cause and hopefully get Sassy acting more like herself. I hope this was helpful!

He is so cute! If you are finding that he is urinating while he is sleeping then this definitely could be incontinence. I would talk to your vet about trying Proin (aka phenylpropanolamine) to see if this helps. This helps to tighten the urethral sphincter to prevent incontinence. It is used most commonly on female dogs but I have had some success using it in males. If you are seeing puddles throughout the house, he could have a urinary tract infection. I would have your vet do a urinalysis on him to see if there is any bacteria present. Your vet will be able to prescribe him the proper antibiotics to help him feel better. I hope this helps!

This could actually be due to a medical illness. It may be that Spike has a UTI or bladder stones causing his incontinence. I would have him seen by a vet for this problem. The vet can diagnose what is causing it and can treat him. Best of luck.

I find that very young dogs that are spayed can get incontience. However it is not typical in older dogs no matter the method they are spayed. I would make sure a urine sample is checked for infection and crystals. If this is normal than it is possible she has developed incontience due to being spayed. Typically estrogen supplements helps the most prevent dribbling. Hope that helps
