My dog has idiopathic vestibular disease. What to do if she's improving?

Contact your veterinarian and request medication for motion sickness. This may help alleviate Ginger's symptoms. Once the ear infection is under control, the vestibular symptoms may begin to abate. Continue treating the ear as directed by your veterinarian. You can provide support using a large towel or sheet and sling it under her chest and abdomen. Hold the ends as if you were gripping luggage and keep Ginger's body against your legs to provide additional support and assurance.

Hi, it is difficult to tell 100% if the symptoms are related to a peripheral vestibular syndrome or a central vestibular syndrome, as with the peripheral one (affecting the inner ear only) you can have disorientation as well..only advanced imaging will be able to tell if it is just a problem related to the inner ear or if the brain could be affected too. If unable to undergo imaging, then you will have to wait and see what happens, encourage her to eat, mix fresh cooked chicken with hotdog. Have anti sickness medications if necessary, and/or everything else recommended by your vet. Hope this helps !

The signs you described for Deacon do fit with vestibular disease but can also be seen with an inner ear infection, inflammation in the brain and a tumor in the brain. Typically vestibular disease will clear up within 5-7 days although I have seen some pets deal with it for 10-14 days until it is completely resolved. During that time, they are expected to show improvement daily. Of course you always have the option to have him seen at any point. But if he is not back to normal within 5 days or if he is getting worse, then it would be safer to have him examined. In some cases where labyrinthitis or vestibular signs are caused by an ear infection treatment can be instituted and may cure the problem. However some cases may be caused by tumors or trauma supportive care may be the only treatment. It can take a bit for these guys to get their appetite back. Sometimes hand feeding can make things easier, and this is often easier to do by making meatballs of canned food and hand feeding them to your pup. You could also ask your vet if a secondary anti-nausea medication could be added to help. There is one called Cerenia that comes as an injectable the vet can give but also as an oral pill you can give at home.

Poor Lucy! This could be a few different things. The most common things would be geriatric vestibular disease, an inner ear infection, a cerebral vascular accident (stroke), or a brain tumor. A lot of times it is geriatric vestibular disease which is a disorder they get when they get older that causes imbalance, but it improves with time. Unfortunately, they usually need supportive care to prevent dehydration. If she were mine, I would take her to your vet for an exam. Your vet may want to run some blood work to ensure her organs look okay and there is no toxins involved. Your vet will likely recommend supportive care and possibly antibiotics or steroids to cover all the possible problems. They may want to keep her there to watch her closely. It is possible to have both the trigeminal neuralgia and vestibular disease but it is more likely that it is just the vestibular disease. What was originally thought of as trigeminal neuralgia was probably just early signs of the vestibular disease. Typically dogs with this diagnosis recover in 3-5 days and only need supportive care to get through the worst of it. I have however had a patient that took almost 2 weeks to become normal.
