My dog's wrist is hyperextended. Will a brace help it heal properly?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | 8 years and 11 months old | 45 lbs

Hi My norwegian elkhound cross injured her wrist - it hyperextends about 45 degrees when she puts full weight on it - he can put a bit of weight on it and it is straight - this happened about 3 weeks ago. Have taken her to vet who only said to keep her inactive. I now see that there are splints for this. Should I get one and is it possible her tendons and ligaments will heal? thanks Greg Hunter

Yes this can heal and keeping her quiet will prevent further injury. I do recommend a neoprene carpal wrap to use daily when exercising Luna. I get them from handicappedpets.com or therapaw.com. I do not leave it on all the time as I want some normal weight bearing to maintain the ligament strength and to promote healing. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Luna.
