My dog has a bowed leg and twisted paw. Can a brace provide support?

If this twisted leg happened all of a sudden, your puppy likely has a fractured leg, If this happened over time, then it is not growing properly. You will need to make an appointment with a veterinarian for an orthopedic exam and radiographs, Depending on the findings your puppy may need surgery or at least wear a cast for a while to straighten out the leg and help your puppy grow properly. You also need to make sure that your puppy is getting proper puppy food for medium sizd dogs to ensure that he gets all the necessary nutrition to grow into a healthy dog, This leg will not come right by itself, so you will need the help of a veterinarian.

From the pictures, it looks like Bruno is suffering from valgus deformity of his front legs. This is when there is a lateral (outward) turn of the feet. It occurs when the ulna stops growing while the radius continues to grow, causing the radius to begin bowing at the top and rotating outward. This is can cause discomfort to Bruno and it is something that can be fixed surgically. You can speak to your vet about surgical treatment of this deformity.

It looks like Charlie could have some carpal valgus, usually due to a joint deformity that causes bowing of the front legs. There is an increased risk for arthritis in dogs with joint valgus, although some dogs go through their lives with no symptoms. I would watch for limping, stiffness, or reluctance to use stairs or jump which could signify pain due to arthritis. While there is no cure for arthritis the symptoms can be alleviated with pain medications and supplements. Continuing the glucosamine is a great idea, and I would recommend trying to keep Charlie pretty lean since being overweight can make joint issues worse.

Wrapping the leg is unlikely to help and an improperly applied bandage could actually do more harm than good. You could look into a custom brace - these along with physical therapy can be successful although they can cost nearly as much as surgery. Otherwise I’d recommend following your vet’s recommendations for medical management.

I am not aware of a brave that would keep the patella within the femoral groove and therefore help with a luxating patella. Dogs with luxating patellas are predisposed to injuring the cranial cruciate ligament and if this is the case for Milo then a brace might help provide some support to his knee joint until surgery is performed. Using splints and other forms of external coaptation can lead to growth plate and ligament damage in young growing animals so you should definitely check with your vet before purchasing a brace. Depending on how severe the lameness is and whether or not Milo has changes to the bones due to the disease, surgery might be best performed now to prevent further changes, or it might be recommended that you wait until he is close to a year of age and at his adult size.

Hello. Without x-rays it is impossible to know what is actually going on in the paw. It is difficult to say if this will bother her more as she matures, but you really do not have too many options. Perhaps a surgery to fuse & stabilize the paw may be helpful, but will not eliminate all pain & discomfort & you certainly would not amputate the leg unless she began to self-mutilate the paw. So, unless you can have the paw x-rayed, I would take a wait & see how she does. If she over does it when you play with her, then make sure she rests the leg. Otherwise, I would try to avoid pain relieves in such a young dog. Perhaps, once her bones are finished growing & maturing, she may actually do quite well. IT is quite likely if it is causing her to fall over it may be broken or dislocated. Please arrange an emergency appointment for her and prevent her from walking/falling until you can have her fully assessed to prevent further injury. Keep her fasting from food as a mild sedation may be required for xrays
