My dog is hyper and jumps on people. Will a second dog help her?

This is a very common issue with puppies - they often get overly excited during play, and have trouble controlling themselves :) It's possible that your sister may tend to be louder, more active, or move more suddenly when she plays with the puppy, which often results in the puppy getting more "wound up." If your sister doesn't live with you, this may also be happening because the puppy is excited to see her when she comes over. Make sure that you have lots of different toys available for Sherri - long floppy rope or fleece toys for tugging, plush toys for biting and carrying, and smaller toys or balls for chasing and fetching. Your sister should always use a toy when she is playing with Sherri, so that Sherri has something to bite on. If she starts to get too excited, you can ask her to sit for a treat, or engage her in some other activity that is calmer and less exciting until she settles down. If needed, you can even give her something to chew on, such as a bully stick or a Kong stuffed with peanut butter, and put her in her crate for a while to let her calm down. Her ability to stay calm during play should improve as she gets older, just as it does for human children :) In the meantime, you can help her by redirecting her to a calmer activity when needed.

Increased exercise can help. Walking (not running in a park or yard) for at least 30 minutes twice a day (some dogs need much more), doing basic training to give her mental stimulation, using puzzle toys to feed her meals, and scheduling 10 minutes of cuddling/grooming time a day can all help. Consistent exercise (walking on a leash is great) and some basic behavior training could make a big difference. Spaying her could also help keep her from wanting to roam quite so much. As she gets older her activity level will probably decrease some as well.

This sets the basis for how older adults will interact. However, puppies need to be trained what is acceptable to their owners and what is not. When she mouths you, tell her "no" and redirect her to something positive such as a toy. If her behavior persists, walk away. She needs to learn that this type of behavior will not be allowed and she will lose the opportunity to interact with you. She will also benefit from obedience classes. It will build her confidence and help her to understand basic commands. It will give you a basis on which to build upon for further training. If her biting appears more than just playful and is truly aggressive, this can be a serious situation. You will need to seek a behavioral consult with her veterinarian. Puppies can be very rambunctious, and may not yet understand "dog language" so it could be that your older dogs are attempting to teach her appropriate boundaries. Appropriate body language behaviors saying things are "too much" can include showing teeth, low growling or snapping at the air around your puppy. If Elly backs off at this point, she is actually learning to read those signals and not escalate the behavior. However, if it is escalating to full bites, or your puppy continues to pester the dogs even if they've told her off, it is time to step in and give everyone a time out. Removing Elly from the situation completely in either a crate for some time out with a toy, or in a different room can help. Puppies are VERY full of energy, so extra walks or a puppy kindergarten class where she can interact with other dogs her age and size can help her learn to interact safely while burning excess energy. Once she is vaccinated, the dog park can be a place to go, but it is best that she knows how to properly interact with and respond to "dog language" prior to going so a fight doesn't start. If you are concerned that things are getting bad between all the dogs, it is best to keep them separated at all times unless under close supervision, and to contact a local trainer or behaviorist in your area that can help you in person.

I think it is a great idea to have Akira socialize with the other dog (as long as the other dog is healthy and vaccinated). This will help her learn how to interact with other dogs and teach her appropriate play behavior. It will also help her have an outlet for her energy so that training her will be easier for you.
