Why does my dog make human-like sobbing sounds? Should I worry?

Crying out could be an indication of anxiety or pain in your dog. This may just be a behavioral issue and your pup cries out to get you attention. If these episodes are consistent and increase in frequency then I would recommend having your puppy checked out to make sure there is nothing causing him pain or discomfort. I hope this helps. Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! Sounds like a scary moment with Abby! I am wondering if Abby had an episode of reverse sneezing. It is a very loud sucking in sound through the nose and their face has a pained grimaced look. It can be quite scary. Causes for revere sneezing are allergies, foreign body in the nose, an infection, or just a tickle one time thing. Some breeds have the episodes more often, I see it in a lot of Beagles. This could be due to a behavioral change (anxiety, fear, etc.) or it could be caused by an underlying health problem. Pain and discomfort due to a variety of causes can make dogs vocalize and seek human attention. I recommend taking him to your vet for a health evaluation to make sure that there is not a physical cause of this behavior change. Your vet can talk with you about ways to change the behavior if it turns out there is no underlying medical issue.

Hi there and thanks for your post. It is not uncommon for puppies as well as dogs to dream. Sometimes they can howl or cry/whimper in their sleep when they are experiencing a dream. As far as tear production goes, dogs do not cry (produce tears when upset or for emotional reasons) like we do. Some dogs do seem to make sighing noises when they lay down or are resting. As long as your dog doesn't seem to be having difficulty breathing or seem uncomfortable, then I don't think him sighing is a cause for concern. If you feel it is more than normal you could possible do a video recording of the episodes and show them to your veterinarian for evaluation.
