Can I use human eye drops like Clear Eyes for my dog's red eyes?

Most all over the counter ocular lubricants are safe for dogs. I would not recommend using anything that is supposed to reduce redness because this could mask an underlying problem. If your dog seems irritated by the drops, he may be sensitive to one of the ingredients in the drops, and I would not continue use. If your dog has been diagnosed with an eye problem (dry eye, corneal ulcer), always check with your veterinarian regarding any additional ocular lubricants that you may be giving. There may be a better alternative that your vet can provide!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Human products that are natural tears such as Clear Eyes can be used, just be extra certain there are no medicinal ingredients. If the eyes are red and watering however, she might need medications and a visit to the vet is a good idea. As long as she isn't squinting, you can try the natural tears first, but if she isn't 100% by tomorrow then I would have her seen, or if she starts squinting then have her seen ASAP. It is never recommended to clean your dog's eye with any medication that has not been prescribed by a vet. That's because a dog's eye reacts differently to human medications than a human's eye. Without knowing the name of this drug, I can't say if it is safe or not to use on Bruno. I would not recommend using this on Bruno's eye unless it has been prescribed by a vet first.

You can try applying some drops to her eyes 3-4 times a day to see if this resolves her clinical signs. Yellow discharge can be a sign of infection, however, which requires eye medications prescribed by your veterinarian. They will first want to perform a full ocular exam to look for evidence of corneal scratches or ulcers, as this would alter treatment. As a reminder, never give dogs pain medication that is intended for humans, as they can be fatally toxic to dogs. I hope this is helpful!

Hello again. Yes, human artificial tears are fine, that is what I use in the office. You can place a few drops into the eye every hour, or every few hours. It totally depends on your schedule. I would want to instill the drops at least 3-4 times a day. You can not over apply. Any concerns, please see your veterinarian as soon as possible. If Aspen’s eye is red, but seems otherwise normal then you can try using this eye gel that you can buy at Petco.
