My 4lb dog is hot, whistles, and stomach growls. What's wrong?

At her weight she is allowed to drink up to 110cc of water within 24 hours. If she eats more dry food or when it is very hot, she can drink a bit more. 110cc is 3.71 fluid oz. So your dog is well within her normal water intake.

Not every food is the same amount of calories per cup so she may require more per day than her previous diet. Because she gets sick on an empty stomach, I would split the daily amount into 2 or 3 meals a day. It is common for dogs not to eat when its hot- they don't require the calories. As long as she is eating the recommended amount per day I wouldn't be concerned. Good luck and kisses to Snowball!

Please take Precious to the vet right away. It sounds like she is in pain based on your description, and it's important that she be seen to figure out why and to get her treated. Dairy products can sometimes cause gastrointestinal upset, which may make her current problem worse, so I wouldn't give any more milk. Good luck, and I hope she feels better soon!

I am sorry to hear about Scooter. If he weights 30 pounds the maximum amount of water he can consume that is considered "normal" for his size is about 5 and 1/4 cups. If he is drinking more than this at the weight of 30 pounds I would recommend bringing him to the vet for examination. There are many possible causes of increased thirst and urination including diabetes, kidney disease, cushing's disease (an endocrine disorder), urinary tract diseases, and more. They vet will examine him and likely recommend bloodwork and urinalysis to screen for possible causes.

Adding water to her meals is fine. If you observe that she is drinking more than usual or urinating more than usual, she may need to have her urine checked. The only way to measure water intake is to separate her and measure the amount of water offered subtracted from the amount she consumes in 24 hours. Most healthy pets will consume enough if made available.

Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. The lack of drinking concerns me as that can easily lead to dehydration. I recommend that you have Blu evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Some dogs are compulsive drinkers and behaviorally will drink non-stop if allowed. If she is also urinating a lot and is underweight I’d recommend a vet exam, blood work and fecal testing. I’d assume at her young age the drinking excessively is behavioral. If she isn’t active and not in the heat limit her water intake a bit. As for her appetite if she is underweight then I’d be concerned for parasites or a digestive disorder. Shepherds can be affected by pancreatic insufficiency and inflammatory bowel disease. If she is underweight then increase her food by 25% every 2-4 weeks until she had has ideal body condition.
