My dog's histiocytoma ruptured. How to prevent more & wound care?

I agree with Dr. Botinas. Histiocytomas are very common in dogs this age and since she had one previously it is likely this is one as well. This one does look pretty advanced though and "angry". I think this should be surgically removed and sent to the lab for a histopathology as well. If you don't believe this is a histiocytoma then it is especially important to have it removed because the other options for tumors it could be are not good....... Changing the diet is not likely to help. If it is a histiocytoma usually they regress on their own within 3 months. If you keep bothering them it makes them "angry" and they will increase in size. I suggest you leave it alone if you are not going to have it surgically removed. If it does not regress then you can have surgery done at that time. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like it could be a sebaceous cyst that got infected and ruptured. These are benign but sometimes they do keep opening and become bothersome to the pet until you surgically remove them. That being said, in a dog of this age, I always recommend seeing your vet for a closer inspection and a needle aspirate if needed- just to make sure it’s something benign. For now, I recommend an E-collar for Hank so that he can lick/chew at it. Then clean the wound with some hydrogen peroxide. Best wishes to you and Hank!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Moco! Due to his age, the appearance and the location it looks like a histiocytoma. Which is a benign mass in young dogs. They tend to resolve on their own in a few months but sometimes if they ulcerate, grow rapidly, become infected or bleed we recommend removing them. Another possibility is a mast cell tumor. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Since Odie is young, it is likely a benign growth called a histiocytoma. Histiocytomas are pink hairless, button like growths commonly found on the limbs of young dogs. They spontaneously regress on their own in 2-3 months. They tend to ulcerate before they regress. If the growth increases in size rapidly or Odie keeps traumatizing it or it doesn't resolve in a reasonable time frame consider surgical removal and biopsy. You shoudl protect it from licking by having him wear an elizabethan collar at all times. You shoudl keep it clean and dry but only wash it if it gets dirty. Do not use hydrogen peroxide. You can apply a dab of organic coconut oil to it twice a day and rub it in well. Just so you know, a histiocytoma is the most likely cause based upon his age but a cancerous Mast Cell tumor can look exactly the same. It typically affects older pets but young pets can get it. When you can, I recommend to have the mass tested. Financing may be an option through Scratch Pay or Care Credit. I hope this helps.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. What i am seeing in the pictures is likely a sebaceous cyst that ruptured. These are common with older dogs and are benign. When these rupture there is a chance they will become infected so the best treatment is to have it removed to prevent this from happening. These are common but benign (not cancerous) growths on young dogs. They show up quickly and looks angry but they go away on their own in 3-4 months. Sometimes they cause the pet to scratch at them and need to be surgically removed but most of the time they cause no concerns.
