My puppy has a strange stomach growth. Could it be a histiocytoma?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Since Odie is young, it is likely a benign growth called a histiocytoma. Histiocytomas are pink hairless, button like growths commonly found on the limbs of young dogs. They spontaneously regress on their own in 2-3 months. They tend to ulcerate before they regress. If the growth increases in size rapidly or Odie keeps traumatizing it or it doesn't resolve in a reasonable time frame consider surgical removal and biopsy. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Young dogs get benign tumors called histiocytomas. These usually grow quickly, but the immune system will typically resolve the problem within a month or so. However, if the lump is still there in a month or so then I would be a good idea to have him evaluated by your veterinarian. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From your pictures it looks like a growth. It doesn’t look like a tick or an egg. Possible causes are benign sebaceous hyperplasia or adenoma or histiocytoma or a more sinister mast cell tumor. Sadly many skin growths can look the same. It isn’t wrong to have your vet check it out. I definitely would do that if it grows quickly. Good luck!

Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. The treatment for it will really depend on what it is so there is no general cream or ointment to put on these types of growths. If he has been scratching at it, you can consider using an e-collar while you wait to take him to your veterinarian and this will prevent any selft-trauma if that is currently an issue. Tornado is very young, so there is a chance that this could be something called a histiocytoma. This type of mass is commonly seen in younger animals and is non-cancerous that typically goes away on its own. Some cases need to be surgically removed if they are not resolving or if they are growing in size.The other possibility is that it is something cancerous. Mast cell tumor would certainly be on my list of rule outs. To be certain this is nothing to be concerned about, I would recommend that you take Tornado in to be seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.
