Dog's skin around hip is irritated. What can I do before the vet?

This looks like a moist bacterial dermatitis. This likely happened because the joint hurt and your dog was licking the area. This damaged the skin and bacteria can then cause the dermatitis. You will need to take Ranger to a veterinarian for an exam of the hip and the skin. Ranger will likely need pain medication for the pain in his hip and a prescription antibiotic for the dermatitis. The are of the affected skin will need to be shaved, cleaned and disinfected.

Poor Stewie! That area does look really sore. From the picture there appears to be two focal areas of redness as if there maybe a healing wound in the area. It is possible that Stewie developed the hotspot around an injury or insect sting. Sometimes inflammation such as this require stronger medications such as oral steroids or antibiotics. If he is sensitive enough that it is difficult for you to bathe that area and you feel the spray is not working it would be best for you to have Stewie examined by your veterinarian again so that they may prescribe stronger medications.

It looks like from your pictures that Jasper could have a skin infection, and that could be caused by bacteria, yeast, allergies, or a fungal infection. The best thing you can do is take him into the vet on Monday. The vet can diagnose what is causing his skin irritation, and can give him a treatment for it. Over this weekend, if it's bothering him, you can try giving him an oatmeal bath which may be temporarily soothing to his skin. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

This can be related to a skin infection, growth (slightly more likely if Louie is a little older), or a bug bite. A veterinary exam can determine the definitive cause, and would be required for prescription antibiotics. In the meantime, you can carefully use an electric clipper to clear hair from the area if you feel comfortable. You can also get Louie an e-collar or “cone” to prevent him from continuing to lick the area and cause further trauma. A mild pet shampoo can also be used to keep the area clean. You should try soothing oatmeal shampoo (can be by TropiClean or Burt's Bees - both available online and at pet shops) - it will give Flip some relief. Once your vet is fully open, please take Flip for an appointment as he may need a prescription-only shampoo or anti-allergic tablets.

Oh I see what you mean! This could be from an allergic reaction or a skin infection. Without seeing Buddy in person, I can't say for certain what is going on. I'd have him seen by a vet in the morning to have this diagnosed and treated.

From the pictures you have provided, it appears as though there is some hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin) and erythema (redness). This may be due to allergies or from friction / chaffing in that region. I have seen this occur in dogs that are very active but on the front legs, not the back legs. I would recommend starting a shampoo such as Douxo PS with chlorhexidine shampoo and bathe twice weekly until this skin condition resolves. I would also apply a spray such as Malacetic Conditioning spray 2-3 times per day until resolved. If Muffin has been licking at this area, I would strongly recommend buying a plastic cone (elizabethan collar) to keep Muffin from licking / chewing at this area. If there is no improvement then I would suggest having Muffin's veterinarian examine this area and perform some additional testing to help determine what this could be so that the most appropriate treatment can be recommended.
