Why is my dog's red or brown spot between her hip and leg growing?

It's a little odd that it is only on one side of the belly/leg. The rust color looks like saliva staining from your dog licking more frequently. The brown spots are likely clogged pores. I would work with your vet to treat itching (making sure he is on a good-quality flea preventative), food allergies, atopy, etc. You can also ask for a benzoyl peroxide dog shampoo to help flush the pores.

Hypothyroidism (low functioning thyroid) – Up to 33% of dogs diagnosed with hypothyroidism showed signs of hyperpigmentation as one of their symptoms 2. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus – Some dogs diagnosed with lupus 3. Allergies – If your dog experiences allergies he may also develop hyperpigmented areas on his skin 4. Malassezia – Is a yeast infection that often has hyperpigmentation as a symptom 5. Demodicosis (skin mites) – Is caused by a mite and is a lesser known cause of hyperpigmentation Pseudo-Cushing’s Syndrome – Is an endocrine disorder that is common in dogs middle age and older and can have hyperpigmentation as a result The skin may go back to normal color if you can treat the underlying cause. That would entail some advanced testing with your vet. Lather it on the dog, leave it sit on the coat for 10 minutes and then rinse thoroughly. Use 2-3 times a week. Though I cannot diagnose Mindy without seeing her in person, I would be happy to share some possible causes and advice on next steps. This could be a benign growth, similar to a mole or freckle on a person or a malignant growth (cancer). Several types of cancer can affect the skin, particularly lighter areas that have less hair. The area does not seem to be infected, as there is no discharge, redness, or swelling, but a bacterial or fungal infection is a possibility. You can have Mindy evaluated by a veterinarian who can take a small piece, or biopsy of the area to definitively diagnose the growth. This may require light sedation or general anesthesia to completely remove it. You can continue to monitor the area for an increase in size, margins, change in color, or additional discharge. If you notice any change in Mindy, you should definitely have her examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. I hope this helps!

Hello. All I can see is a small area of dermatitis on the leg. It can have many causes, but you can treat this with an over the counter skin antiseptic called Hibiclens. Gently scrub the skin twice a day & dab dry ( do not rinse ). Do this for about 2-3 weeks & the lesion should clear up. But since I cannot make any kind of actual diagnosis, if the skin becomes more irritated or the area does not seem to be healing, please consider seeing your veterinarian. It's possible that Feli has been licking or scratching this area, causing these abrasions. This type of lesion can develop pretty quickly - even overnight. Some of the most common causes of itching include allergies and fleas. Make sure that she's regularly receiving a good quality flea preventive (Bravecto, Nexgard, Credelio and Simparica are all great prescription options, and K9 Advantix II is available over the counter). You can also give her a bath in a gentle oatmeal or baby shampoo in case there are any lingering allergens on her coat causing irritation. You certainly don't need to rush her to a vet for these lesions alone, but if they get worse or spread, then you should take her to get checked out. When dogs scratch, they can damage the protective skin barrier, which can make them susceptible to developing skin infections. I hope that she's on the mend soon!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Based on the photos you provided, I suspect what you are seeing could be a hot spot from Willow chewing at herself. This could also be a skin infection. I would recommend using a product called Sentry Wound Ointment from PetCo and apply to the area until resolved.
