My dog's hind leg is twitching and his body is rocking. What's wrong?

If you have done a thorough check of his leg and are finding nothing wrong with Chief and he is walking on the leg just fine, I would monitor this for now. I have seen this in quite a few puppies and when I examined the puppy further, I found nothing wrong and it resolved on its own. If Chief begins to show signs of pain / discomfort, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. It looks like Chief is about 12 weeks of age, so at this age he still needs to go through the remainder of his puppy vaccinations. At his next vaccination appointment, I would discuss this further with the examining veterinarian. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is hard one... it is difficult to say exactly what is happening to Ace here without doing an exam first. This behavior you mentioned could be many things- it could be spinal pain, focal seizures, or another neurological condition. I would highly recommend Ace see his veterinarian for an exam soon. You may also want to capture a video of these episodes on your phone to show to your veterinarian as this may help aide in a diagnosis.

It could be a muscle spasm caused by a sprain/strain, neurological disorder, etc. If it continues, have your vet take a look at her to determine if treatment is needed. She may need an anti-inflammatory to treat the problem.

What you are describing makes me think that Reggie’s problem is related to the nerves in his foot/leg. This would explain the twitching and sometimes if there is pain from the nerves dogs will bite/chew on the area. I would recommend taking Reggie to a vet to be examined. He may have an orthopedic or neurological issue causing pain/discomfort and your vet may be able to prescribe some medication to help him be more comfortable. I hope this helps. Poor pup. Muscle twitches in a pet so young can be caused by a toxin ingestion, a metabolic imbalance (i.e. Low calcium), an underlining neurological disorder, or it can just be a sign of pain somewhere in the body. If the muscle twitches are happening for more than a few hours then it is best to take Chevy to you nearest veterinarian for a complete neurological examination so that he receives the appropriate treatment. At the very least they can give him muscle relaxers to help with his symptoms and then any pain medication he may need. I hope your puppy gets well soon. Best wishes and good luck at the vet.

If Scrapoy is having neurologic signs (leg weakness, knuckling, not moving the leg(s), walking drunk) I would worry that he is suffering from a slipped disk in his neck or back. The shaking is common when dogs are in pain and disk can be very painful. I would recommend taking Scrapoy to the Vet today for an exam. I hope this helps and I wish you the very best!

Possibilities include toxin exposure, infection, heart problems, neurologic problems, endocrine/hormone problems, kidney/liver/gallbladder disease, cancer, etc. I would advise taking Charlie to your veterinarian right away to get him assessed. Your vet can gather a history, perform an exam and then advise a diagnostic/treatment plan based on their findings. Possible tests include fecal/blood/urine tests, x-rays/ultrasound. Once a diagnosis is made a treatment plan can be implemented. Good luck with Charlie
