My dog's fever is still 103.6 after vet. What should I do now?

Usually a virus is what causes a persistent high fever. I suggest you consult with the vet to get some medication to treat the fever like a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory. Often intravenous fluids are needed to correct dehydration as well.

A fever this high is usually indicative of a bacterial or viral disease going on. Your veterinarian will need to run some tests to try and determine the cause of the fever. Once the cause is identified the proper antibiotics, antifungals, or antipruritic drugs can be prescribed. The tablet given to your dog is basically a fever reducer but will not treat the cause of the fever. I would recommend taking your dog in for a recheck as soon as you’re able to. Poor guy. Not every pet with a fever has an infection, so if the antibiotic isn’t working it’s either because there is no infection, the infection is internal, or the antibiotic is not the right kind of antibiotic for the infection. Your pet needs additional testing to sort this out and make sure we are on the right track with treatment. I would start with baseline bloodwork and a urinalysis. Best to take your pet back in to your vet or to another vet for a second opinion here so that we can get a proper diagnosis and tailored treatment based on your pets specific problem. If your dog had been exercising or out in the heat it is possible his temperature could have increased due to this, but 104.1 is a pretty high temperature if you feel it was truly an accurate reading. We can see dogs temperatures get that high if they are really hot/excited/stressed and they are overweight or brachycephalic (smoosh faced) but I am concerned that his energy level was decreased. If he still doesn't seem himself tomorrow then I would bring him in for an exam. If overnight his temperature gets very high again, or he becomes weak, has trouble breathing, or his gums become pale in color or he starts having other symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea then I would consider bringing him in to the emergency vet.

If Monaco still has a temperature that has increased to over 40 degrees Celsius, he may have an infection or inflammation elsewhere that is unrelated to him ingesting some of your female Samoyed's hair. Especially if his appetite is decreased, and he has had some abnormal GI signs, I recommend having him seen by your veterinarian. He/she can perform a physical exam and may recommend bloodwork to look for any underlying cause of his fever. Otherwise, if he is acting normally at home (normal appetite, drinking, urination and defecation, and is not vomiting or having diarrhea), he may likely be OK and you can monitor him at home. Make sure it is in-fact a fever. Dogs have a higher temperature than people. If his temperature is less than 39C, then he does not have a fever. Fever usually indicates one of the following: 1). Infection 2) Toxin ingestion 3). Heat stress If he just got done playing and/or running around, then it may be heat stress. The temperature will go down if he stays calm in a cool environment. If it's not heat stress and his temperature is above 39C, then this is an emergency and he needs to go to the vet. Do not give any fever medication meant for people, because these can be dangerous. The vet will have to give special dog medicine to bring down the fever. I hope that helps and all is well with Softie.

If Mia has a fever it is probably because she is suffering from an infection. you need to take her to the vet in order to get her checked, if she has an infection indeed the vet will prescribe an antibiotic course for Mia to get better.
