Why is my dog so tired in heat? How to prevent unwanted breeding?

Lethargy is normal for dogs who are in heat, and is due to the hormonal and prostaglandin changes that occur with a heat. This lethargy will pass when her heat is over, and there's really nothing you can do for her since it is due to hormonal and prostaglandin changes. I would just let her rest, give her love and attention.

Being in heat can cause behavioural changes in dogs, as long as they are not too extreme and the dog is otherwise well I would not worry too much. Quite often when in heat dogs well be lethargic and not want to eat very much.

Lethargy and diarrhea re not usually normal during a heat cycle. Most dogs will be actively looking to mate, alert, receptive and have swelling of the vulva along with some bleeding. If you are seeing discharge that is not bleeding, diarrhea and lethargy it is best to bring her into a vet as soon as possible.

Dogs can feel lethargic and not want to eat during their heat cycle especially their first one. However, this shouldn't last long. Vomiting is a bit unusual for a heat cycle. She should get a physical examination by a veterinarian to make sure she doesn't have gastroenteritis or pancreatitis.

I can understand being worried about your male dog, but this is normal. He wants to mate with Bailey, and the hormones are effecting him and causing him to pant. This can go on for days, and sometimes males can will stop eating and can injury themselves trying to get to the female so they can mate. If you do not want puppies, the only way to stop this behavior is to move either Bailey or your male dog out of the house. Preferably the male dog so you can keep Bailey isolated to prevent her from mating. Have him go stay at a friend's house while she is in heat (this lasts three to four weeks). I would also make an appointment with the vet to have him neutered, and I would get Bailey spayed after she is out of heat. Otherwise, you will have to deal with this every time she is in heat. Seasons in dogs are usually not related to low energy levels and lethargy. If you also noticed that Brava is drinking excessively and is off food you should take her to your vet to make sure that she doesn't have uterine infection. Regarding pain relief- we don't think that seasons are painful to dogs so we generally don't recommend pain killers for that.

Poor girl. Some dogs have a tougher time than others when it comes to their first heat cycle. However she does seem to bra late bloomer as most dogs have their first heat cycle around 6-10 months. If she is this ill I would recommend having her to examined by your vet to make sure she isn't having any complications or other underlying illness that's causing this. If she is found to have a ln abnormally intense heat cycle, then the vet can prescribe some safe pet friendly pain medicaiton for her to get for the next few days until the brunt of her menstrual cycle has passed. In the meantime I try placing a warm compress on her belly for a few minutes (be very careful not to leave on too long or you can easily burn your pets skin) to help ease some of the discomfort. hope she feels better soon!
