How long do heat cycles last for my medium to large mixed breed dog?

Hi there, and thank you for posting this question. The average heat cycle lasts about 4 weeks, however there is some variation. Typically dogs do not have bloody discharge for more than a week or so during this process. The vulva does remain swollen during this time, and after their first heat cycle it will remain more "mature" in appearance than it was prior. Most will be on average around 7 days long. A fair amount of blood coloured fluid will be produced, however dogs are pretty good at cleaning themselves up. About 1 month after she has finished bleeding, I would talk to your vet about getting her desexed to prevent pyometra (pus filled uterus), decrease her risks of mastitis, and many different types of cancers, and prevent unwanted pregnancies. When she bleeds, she is in pre-estrus. This is the time where she prepares for estrus (heat). This means she will be bleeding for about 2-3 weeks, continuously. Then the bleeding gets less and her discharge will be more of a clear red-tinged discharge. This is when she actually will go into heat for another 3 weeks, approximately, and this is where is can conceive. You should wait until about two months after her heat cycle is over before having her spayed. A dog's heat cycle usually lasts 2-4 weeks. To be safe, I would wait until your dog's vulvar bleeding has stopped for a whole week AND her vulva has returned to its normal size/is no longer swollen. It is always recommended to stay close to Seyla at the dog park in order to intervene quickly in case aggression/attempted mating even if she is no longer in heat occurs.

Hi, Dogs are in heat for 2-3 weeks and bleed for 7-10 days. On average dogs come in to heat every 6 months, give or take. Smaller dogs come in to heat more often and giant dog breeds may be only once a year. Goldens are large breed dogs so maybe every 6 months to a year

The typical heat cycle can last 2 to 4 weeks. Over that time, you may see a swollen vulva, bleeding and dis charge. Monitor for lethargy, foul odor, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, or increased discharge. A uterine infection (pyometra) can occur 2 to 8 weeks after a heat cycle. Ideally, Duchess should be spayed to prevent pyometra in the coming years.

Thank you for submitting your question! Most puppies will start their first heat cycle anywhere from about 6-10 months of age. It can last upwards of 18-21 days. You will notice swelling of her vulva and mammary chain. She will spot and bleed as well. Some dogs keep themselves very clean and you only see small amounts of discharge, others will require diapers. You may observe some behavioral changes as well. These can include a decreased appetite, attraction to male dogs or being more clingy to you. Most dogs will cycle every 6-9 months with small dogs cycling more frequently and giant breeds less.
