Should I worry about Hartz UltraGuard Pro flea shampoo side effects?

Hello. Thank you for using PetCoach. You should not have to use any flea shampoo now that she is on the Nexgard. Those flea shampoos are harsh on their skin and full of chemicals. You can use the L'oreal but it is not really recommended. If you do use it, use it sparingly and don't make it a habit. Dog skin is a different pH than ours, therefore, our shampoos tend to dry them out and strip the natural oils from their coats. I suggest you use a calming dog shampoo like this one. It will not dry her out or strip the oils. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is not a good idea to use flea products off label, as they can be very dangerous. However, if you are going to see problems with it, then the puppy should already be tremoring or shaking. If you haven't seen any issues in the first 48 hours then it is very unlikely to see any concerns. There aren't any long-term effects. I would just monitor for now. Best of luck with your new puppy!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Scout! I haven't heard of limping as a side effect of flea shampoo. Usually the side effects are GI (vomiting, diarrhea, not eating), lethargy, skin irritation or neurologic (seizures, twitching). I think maybe he hurt himself before, during or after the bath and that is the the cause of the limping. The discomfort and lethargy could be from the bath or the painful leg. If he is still uncomfortable, lethargic, limping, not eating through out the day then I would bathe him in Dawn to remove the flea product and take him to the Vet. I recommend the edible flea and tick products (Nexgard, Bravecto or Simparica) to prevent and get rid of flea infestations. I wish Scout the best!

Usually the symptoms are pretty immediate. If you haven’t seen anything within 2-4 hours she will likely be fine. Most often what you will see is neurological symptoms. Anything abnormal, get her to a vet ASAP. I’d wait about a week before applying any topical flea/tick medications at this point. Please stay away from Hartz products in general. They are not recommended. I suggest you talk to your vet about what products are best to use in your area.

Fleas are the worst but the good news is that you can effectively get rid of them if you use a good product and are diligent in the treatment. The key to getting rid of fleas is to make sure EVERY dog and cat in the house is treated with a good flea prevention AND that this treatment lasts an entire 6 months. Your vet can give you access to the best flea products on the market. Oral flea products like Simparica, Nexgard and Bravecto are the best products out there because they kill fleas so quickly. This decreased to potential for the female fleas to lay eggs which breaks the life cycle. Since the product is in the bloodstream, it also can't be washed off. Lastly, because they are new, there is not a resistance issue in the flea population. They are also cost competitive with a name brand product like Frontline. I recommend to get Smallie on one of these oral flea products and use it for 6 months. If you use a topical flea prevention, only wash Smallie just before the next application of flea prevention is due. Topical flea products like the one you applied can be washed off which means they won't work as well. Also know you will likely continue to see fleas for at least 6 weeks (assuming your product is working correctly) because of the newly emerging adult fleas. Lastly, know there is great variation in the effectiveness of topical flea products. As far as they go, for over the counter options, Seresto, name brand Frontline and Advantage/Advantix are your best options. Use them as directed. I would monitor Mufasa for now and if he begins to tremble, shake, twitch or have seizures, take him to the veterinarian immediately. You did the right thing by rinsing him off immediately. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Dani is super cute! I think that is just A LOT of chemicals that are not necessary. Fipronil, which Frontline, just isn't that good anymore. I see multiple pets a week that have infestations and are using Fipronil. Flea baths do nothing to prevent fleas from jumping back on by the next day. Fipronil shouldn't by used 2 days before or 2 days after bathing or the product will not work well. With all the new products out there: Seresto collar, Bravecto, Simparica and Nexgard I see not reason to put 3 different chemicals on your dog. I am sure she will be fine but almost every product comes with risks and side effects which are likely compounded by using 3 at once. Most are chemicals aimed specifically at insect biology not mammalian. I would choose one product and use that. I hope this helps and I wish you and Dani the best!
