Is it safe to bathe my dog with flea or human shampoo after Nexgard?

While it's not recommended to combine flea treatments, this should be ok. I'd just monitor Layla to be safe, but I would not expect a reaction. Next time she needs a bath and you don't have any dog shampoo, you can use Dawn dish soap. I hope this helps!

Nexgard is a great preventative and I would give it more time before switching to something else. Hopefully the scratching is not a reaction to it as that would be quite unusual. If the itchiness continues despite giving it a few days, that would likely be due to allergies rather than a cause of using Nexgard. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Not 100% sure what you mean by an Advantix flea bath. Advantix is a topical flea treatment applied on the skin of dogs. Yes you can use Nexgard along with Advantix. Great multimodal flea/tick strategy. After you have used both oral and topical treatments together for 3 months or so, any environmental problem inside the home should be addressed. That gives enough time for most if not all of the immature stages to mature and be killed by the products. After that time period, you may be able to drop back down to one product each month. Depends on your geographical location and your particular flea problem. Good luck

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, dogs will shed after a bath. They also shed a lot if they have skin problems like fleas or an infection. If you have bathed him daily for 4 days in a row then that could be causing excessive hair loss and could dry out his skin. If he has fleas I recommend using a long lasting flea preventative like Nexgard, Bravecto, Simparica, or the Seresto collar. Flea baths only last a day and are not good preventatives. Good luck!

I never consider flea shampoo safe to use, so my answer is no, instead if he has fleas i would recommend using one of the followings (which you can use right away): Bravecto, Nexgard, Advantage, Comfortis.

Benzoyl peroxide shampoo is PERFECT for this!! Yes, use it!. Lather it, let it sit for 10 minutes and then rinse. The contact time is VERY important. You can actually bather her this way every 3-4 days. It it will help to flush the mites out of the hair follicles where they live. Will definitely speed up recovery. No side effects. Fleas are the worst but the good news is that you can effectively get rid of them if you use a good product and are diligent in the treatment. The key to getting rid of fleas is to make sure EVERY dog and cat in the house is treated with a good flea prevention AND that this treatment lasts an entire 6 months. Your vet can give you access to the best flea products on the market. Oral flea products like Simparica, Nexgard and Bravecto are the best products out there because they kill fleas so quickly. This decreased to potential for the female fleas to lay eggs which breaks the life cycle. Since the product is in the bloodstream, it also can't be washed off. Lastly, because they are new, there is not a resistance issue in the flea population. They are also cost competitive with a name brand product like Frontline. I recommend to get Smallie on one of these oral flea products and use it for 6 months. If you use a topical flea prevention, only wash Smallie just before the next application of flea prevention is due. Topical flea products like the one you applied can be washed off which means they won't work as well. Also know you will likely continue to see fleas for at least 6 weeks (assuming your product is working correctly) because of the newly emerging adult fleas. Lastly, know there is great variation in the effectiveness of topical flea products. As far as they go, for over the counter options, Seresto, name brand Frontline and Advantage/Advantix are your best options. Use them as directed.
