My dog has a hard lump under his jaw and is coughing. What's wrong?

Good morning. If it is towards the back of the jaw it could be an enlarged lymph node or salivary gland. Other possible causes are an abscess or tumor. In young dogs we see a lot of abscesses in that area because they are chewing on sticks or other things and they can puncture the oral tissue and cause an abscess under the jaw. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. A needle aspirate may be done to help determine the diagnosis and treatment plan. The two may be unrelated issues, or it is possible that the lump is related to the cough. The vet may recommend aspirating or biopsying the lump to determine what it is, taking xrays to look at his heart and lungs or other diagnostics.

Since he has not been drinking well, they would also be able to check if something else is also affecting him by checking into other possible concurrent issues such as gastroenteritis or pancreatitis for instance.
