My dog has a soft lump under its jaw overnight. What should I do?

Dog has soft lump under jaw/neck appeared over night.

Good morning. If it is towards the back of the jaw it could be an enlarged lymph node or salivary gland. Other possible causes are an abscess or tumor. In young dogs we see a lot of abscesses in that area because they are chewing on sticks or other things and they can puncture the oral tissue and cause an abscess under the jaw. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. A needle aspirate may be done to help determine the diagnosis and treatment plan. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If only on one side, this could be due to an abscess for example. I recommend that you have Doc evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If this is confirmed to be an abscess, they may drain it and then prescribe antibiotics. Good luck!

At that age a salivary problem is not common but always a possibility. It may be a small abscess or fibrous tissue from where it is trying to heal. If this is not painful and he is able to eat and drink I would monito it for any changes. If it gets bigger or starts to drain or he stops eating then I would take him to your vet.

This could be a tooth root abscess or a swelling from an insect bite or a salivary gland problem. Unless you think this is very painful, there is really nothing you can or need to do. If Chelsea appears in a lot of pain you may want to take her to a vet tonight, but if she is comfortable, then there is nothing you need to do.

Dog has a jaw lump. Is it an emergency or can I wait for the vet?

Given the location, it could be a tooth root abscess. It isn't an emergency, but is likely uncomfortable. If Dolly is behaving normally, she can probably see her veterinarian in the morning. An oral exam can be done to determine if there is periodontal disease and if so, if it is severe enough to cause an abscess. A complete dental cleaning and possibly extractions may be necessary. If an abscess is ruled out, your veterinarian can perform a fine needle aspirate of the lump to collect samples for pathology. This may provide a diagnosis. Treatment options can be discussed once results are returned.

This kind of lump/growth needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Differentials include skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors. My puppy has a sudden, painless bump under her jaw. What is it?

Hi and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I notice the bump on Clover but unfortunately, it is generally impossible to tell what the lump is based on appearance alone. It can be anything from a bug bite (especially since it has gotten smaller), a mass, an abscess, a cyst, a salivary gland or something else. If it is not bothering her right now and does not get bigger, I would monitor her. If it is still there in the morning, I would contact your veterinarian. Your vet may want to feel the area and determine if additional diagnostics are warranted such as a fine needle aspirate OR something else if it does not seem like a mass/cyst/abscess. Good luck!
