My dog has a golf ball-sized hard lump above his eye. What is it?

I can appreciate an increase in size/swelling above the right eye in your photos here. A brain tumor itself normally wouldn't cause a visible swelling, as the brain is encased in the bony skull and a tumor would just cause increased pressure on the brain but not cause changes in the shape of the skull. That being said, we can have bony tumors of the skull that can change the skull shape. We can also have tumors of the soft tissue (skin, muscle, connective tissue) that could be seen on the head, and also tumors of the eye/muscles behind the eye. Your dog should definitely have an examination done by the vet. They may recommend an aspirate of the swelling to help tell what is causing it, an x-ray of the skull, and possibly more advanced imaging like a CT scan. This problem may be something easily fixed or may be more involved, but we won't know without further testing.

Without an exam or diagnostics, it is near impossible to say. It could be anything from local inflammation/infection to a benign or malignant mass. Given Ruckess' history, an exam with your veterinarian or veterinary oncologist would be recommended. A fine needle aspirate can be done to collect a sample for pathology.

It is hard to tell without a biopsy or a needle sample for examination under a microscope. That is probably what your vet will do when you take Peanut in. Sometimes masses that look like this are viral papillomas or benign skin growths, other times they can be aggressive soft tissue tumors. You can never say 100% without some diagnostic testing.

In order to figure out what this swelling truly is, a visit to your vet is required. The vet can take a radiograph of the swelling to gather more clues and possibly even sample the swelling to identify it. Poor Julie! Unfortunately without looking at it, it is difficult to say for sure what this might be. It sounds like a mass. It could be a benign tumor like a sebaceous cyst, mole, or adenoma. It could also be a malignant tumor like a mast cell tumor. I would have your vet take a look at it. Your vet will be able to take a sample from it to see if it looks suspicious of cancer if needed. They will be able to tell you if you can just keep watching it or if you should have it surgically removed. I hope this helps!

Without a picture or examining Laila it's difficult to say what is going on for sure. Dogs can get small tumors on their eyelids called meibomian gland tumors and normally these are benign. However, I'm a little concerned that it has gotten larger overnight. It could also be an area of infection or a more serious tumor type. If you can post a picture of Laila it may be helpful to give you further advice. If not, it would be best to err on the side of caution and have Laila examined by your veterinarian. Given the duration and location of this lump, I am very concerned about a bone or cartilage tumor. It's also possible that there is an infection causing this lump, or it could be a benign cyst. Either way, this could lead to serious problems and should be diagnosed by a veterinarian as soon as possible to prevent it from getting worse or becoming inoperable. In order to know exactly what this is, the vet will need to take a sample of it and analyze it in a laboratory. I recommend taking Riley to the vet within the next week to get this checked-out.
