My dog's losing hair and itching during seasonal fur changes. Why?

I don't think this is seasonal shedding. I would be concerned about causes of hair loss and itching in a puppy, including fleas, mange, lice, infections (bacterial or yeast), and ringworm. A vet examination will be able to help you figure out the cause and best treatment. I would also discuss the diarrhea with the vet. Possible causes include food intolerance or allergies, intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, bacterial or viral infection, stress colitis, among others. Even though Bear was dewormed, the vet should probably do a fecal floatation test to check for intestinal parasites.

Do you have any photos you can post? it is hard to say what may be going on. It may be seasonal alopecia, it could be pemphigus or some other autoimmune disorder. It could be from an endocrine disease (thyroid, cushing's, etc). It could be hormone related. It could just be a severe seasonal allergy. I will not be able to tell you via the internet. If you are very concerned it is best to take him to a veterinary dermatology specialist when he is actually showing symptoms. They may need to do a biopsy or some allergy testing. This is probably caused by an allergic reaction. first of all make sure you de-flea Zoe regularly every month with a high quality spot on (ex. Advantage) as fleas are by far the most common reason for these reactions. If the fleas are not the problem, it could be an allergic reaction to food or an environmental factor. this is more complicated to treat and will sometimes require medications such as Steroids, anti histamines or cyclosporin in order to stop the allergy.

Blowing her coat is normal due to hormonal fluctuations. If she has hair loss with reddened skin then she may have fleas or a skin infection. It is possible that the underlying cause may be allergic skin disease and long term management may be required with medication, specialist shampoos for yeast and bacteria which are common in itchy/damaged skin and specialist diets and supplements such as viacutan. Allergies are possible to airborne pollen even in urban areas as well as foods and dust mites etc and cannot be ruled out in any location

Itchy skin and hair loss is often due to the following things: 1) Allergies - this can happen suddenly and is usually due to an environmental (i.e pollen) cause. 2) External parasites - fleas, lice and mites can all cause intense itching. It's good to check him for fleas and get treatment if needed. The permethrin shampoo is only temporary, so it's possible that he is getting re- infested. He may have mites, which are microscopic and require a vet to find. 3) Over-bathing, or using the wrong product for bathing - Bathing too often can cause the skin to get dry and irritated. Dogs should normally be bathed no more than once a month with a shampoo that is labeled for dogs. If you bathe more than that, or use a shampoo or soap that is meant for people, then you could be damaging the normal protective barrier of the skin. Hello, it looks like Lucky may be shedding his winter coat since it is starting to warm up. If he does have an active skin condition however, look for any sings of itchiness, anxiety, further hair loss, red skin, and scabs. Dogs with skin allergies may also bite and chew at their feet constantly, and environmental allergies are common during this time of the year. If you note any of these, then have lucky seen by his veterinarian as he may need medications. Please also make sure that he has monthly flea and tick control as fleas can also cause severe itchiness and hair loss, especially around his lower back, legs and belly.
