My dog loses fur every summer. What causes seasonal hair loss?

From your description it sounds as though Istra becomes itching and loses patches of fur during seasonally shedding periods. It is possible that this is due to environmental allergens such as pollen or dust. There many ways to manage seasonal allergies including medicated shampoos, antihistamines and fish oil. Other things can cause hair loss and itching including infections, mange and food allergies but these problems are typically not seasonal

Hi. Thanks for the photos. There are a few common things that can cause the dark coloring, hair loss, and even itching. The most common can be allergies. Others would be deep infection, parasitic, low thyroid, and hormonal imbalances. With the photos here and the severity, I am highly suspicious of severe allergies or low thyroid level. I would make an appointment with your veterinarian when you are able and they will do a full exam. They will do some skin testing, bloodwork that will include thyroid levels, and whatever medication may be needed depending on the probable cause after an exam. Good luck

The most common reasons for hair loss are: skin infection, ring worm, demodex or underlying metabolic issue like a low thyroid and cushing's disease (older dogs). Also in some breeds, like boxers, will get a seasonal flank alopecia. Without seeing a picture it is hard to know what is causing Derby's hair to fall out. It is best to have him seen by your Vet. Hi, there are a number of different causes for hair loss in dogs. First of all dogs shed hair normally as part fo the normal hair cycle. However, if you notice areas on your dog’s fur where fur is missing, then it could be secondary to a skin condition. There are 2 categories of skin diseases, those that cause itchiness and those that don’t cause itchiness. In the first one, dogs can have skin parasites such as fleas or mites, in the second one the hair loss can be secondary to a metabolic condition such hypothyroidism for example.
