Why does my dog get a gurgly stomach and lick the floor monthly?

Garling noises are called borborygmi and this can be normal stomach noises, but when heard along with lack of appetite this suggests gastritis (inflamed stomach). Gastritis can be cause by many things including dietary indiscretion (eating something he shouldn't have), FB ingestion, and many organ malfunctions. The rubbing of the side of his butt on things is also a sign that his anal glands (two sacs located on the inside of his rectum at the 4 o'clock and 10 o'clock position) are possibly full and irritating him. Anal glands are suspected to be caused by allergies and also often get full when pets go through bouts of diarrhea, because normally they are expressed when hard feces push past them. Because of the multiple factors that are affecting your pet, and the possible need for him to get his anal glands manually expressed to reduce discomfort, I am recommending taking him into your vet for a good exam. If he is found to have some GI upset then an appropriate antibiotics can be prescribed to help him. I would also recommend a probiotic, such as Culturelle over the counter or one from your vet, and a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese to help settle the stomach over the next 4-7 days, then slowly transition him back to his normal diet if all goes well.

Poor Ty! I would first start with some probiotics like purina fortiflora or proviable to help get good bacteria into his gut. You could also try a sensitive stomach diet. I believe science diet makes a one. You could call your vet to see if they can recommend an antacid like Pepcid over the phone. Since I have not seen him, I cannot recommend what is safe for him. The licking of the behind could be his anal glands. If you want to attempt to empty these on your own, you can watch some you tube videos to help guide you. I would also put a cone collar on him to prevent him from making his rear end raw. You can also try Benadryl to help with the itching. See link below. If he isn't improving, I would strongly recommend to have him seen as he may just need some antibiotics to settle his tummy. I would just be honest with your vet that you want to do minimal diagnostics and ask for a quote before you even see the doctor. This will help them and you figure out the best plan for you and Ty. It sounds like Buster's tummy is upset. This could be due to many reasons including bacterial overgrowth, a medication reaction, stomach acid, dietary intolerance or perhaps an oncoming disease like kidney disease. I recommend to play it safe and have Buster examined. The doctor may recommend to check his blood levels to make sure everything is ok internally. The vet may also try a bland diet, probiotic, recommend parasite testing or medication to soothe his tummy. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

It sounds like she experiencing nausea so she may need an anti-nausea medication, like Cerenia, an antacid, and/or a gastrointestinal protectant to help treat. It might also help to put her on a hypoallergenic diet, like z/d or d/d. You could also add a probiotic to her diet and see if that helps. If it continues than you could take her to an internal medicine specialist for an endoscopy and intestinal biopsies to get a definitive diagnosis.

If this is a relatively new situation, then my first thought might be a food allergy has developed. It is not wise just to go out & purchase different foods. To do a food allergy trial you need a targeted food that requires a prescription from your veterinarian. He might want to try a round of antibiotics & stomach protectants first ( dogs can develop ulcers or bacterial overgrowths ). If you do want to try something at home first, you can purchase a probiotic called FortiFlora at most pet stores or on line. Feed 1 packet a day for 30 days & see if this helps. If no response in a couple of weeks, please consult your veterinarian. Hope Oscar is feeling better soon. Take care.

These are general signs of stomach upset, she feels that something is not right in her gastrointestinal tract and she tries to make it better by licking the floor (usually when a dog has access to grass they will ingest grass). She is probably suffering from a gastrointestinal infection, possibly due to something bad she ate. withhold food for 12 hours then offer her boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if she is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put her back gradually on her normal food. If she continues vomiting or is not eating, take her to the vet to get treatment.

If Blue is not vomiting or having diarrhea, is eating normally, has a normal energy and no abdominal pain I wouldn't be concerned about the noises. You could try adding a probiotic (available at most pet stores and online) to his food to see if this makes a difference and seek veterinary care if he does start vomiting/diarrhea/lethargy/pain.
