Why is my dog's stomach gurgling loudly and he's licking his rear?

Garling noises are called borborygmi and this can be normal stomach noises, but when heard along with lack of appetite this suggests gastritis (inflamed stomach). Gastritis can be cause by many things including dietary indiscretion (eating something he shouldn't have), FB ingestion, and many organ malfunctions. The rubbing of the side of his butt on things is also a sign that his anal glands (two sacs located on the inside of his rectum at the 4 o'clock and 10 o'clock position) are possibly full and irritating him. Anal glands are suspected to be caused by allergies and also often get full when pets go through bouts of diarrhea, because normally they are expressed when hard feces push past them. Because of the multiple factors that are affecting your pet, and the possible need for him to get his anal glands manually expressed to reduce discomfort, I am recommending taking him into your vet for a good exam. If he is found to have some GI upset then an appropriate antibiotics can be prescribed to help him. I would also recommend a probiotic, such as Culturelle over the counter or one from your vet, and a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese to help settle the stomach over the next 4-7 days, then slowly transition him back to his normal diet if all goes well.

Without diagnostics, it's hard to know why this is happening. It's possible he has some shifts in his gut bacteria. Things like parasites are also common. There are also more sinister causes. If it has been great than 6 months since Bubbles has had a fecal exam to check for parasites, I recommend to have this done. You may also try boostering his gut bacteria with a probiotic 1 week out of every month. Use Purina FortiFlora. It has been tested and is proven to contain live bacteria. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Cash may be dealing with a food sensitivity and the chewing of the paws may be allergy related. His discomfort in his abdomen may also be related to the diet. I would recommend switching to a sensitive stomach formula food and see if this helps. I wold recommend Science Diet or Royal Canin formulas. Feed either diet for 4 weeks and if no improvement, I would then recommend an abdominal ultrasound or x-rays. I would also consider adding in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora, which can be found online or at your local PetCo. I hope this helps! Hi, I am sorry to hear that Tyson is in pain. Has he eaten anything that he shouldn’t have ? I am thinking if he had any bones for example. These can sometimes breakdown in sharp fragments and even when they pass through the intestines, they can cause a lot of pain especially when in the rectum. The other thing the jumps in my mind is wether he could have troubles with his anal glands, these are located in the muscles around the anus and normally express themselves when dogs go to the toilet, releasing a scent . These little buggers can sometimes get impacted or infected and turn into little abscesses as well. Either way I think it is bets to take Tyson to see a vet and once he has some pain relief on board, he can be examined and helped accordingly.

I was going to suggest the same thing with the pepcid or antacid pills. If that doesn't help I would look into getting her some probiotics like fortiflora which is a powder that goes over the food and can be given daily long term. Another option would be proviable which is a paste that you give orally. Both I would suggest to give long term. I would also make sure your vet has ruled out all parasites including giardia. I have had several patients in the past who have had giardia and showed similar signs. I hope this helps!

It sounds like she experiencing nausea so she may need an anti-nausea medication, like Cerenia, an antacid, and/or a gastrointestinal protectant to help treat. It might also help to put her on a hypoallergenic diet, like z/d or d/d. You could also add a probiotic to her diet and see if that helps. If it continues than you could take her to an internal medicine specialist for an endoscopy and intestinal biopsies to get a definitive diagnosis.

Causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, medications, food allergy/intolerance, new treat/food/table scraps. The straining is due to inflammation and that he feels like he has to defecate but there is little to no stool left. The scooting can be from anal irritation, stool stuck to his anus (check and clean) or his anal glands are full If the diarrhea is bad, then I recommend fasting him for 12-24 hours to rest his GIT and to stop adding "fuel to the fire." Then start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. If the diarrhea continues, he stops eating or starts vomiting he should see your Vet. I hope this helps and I wish Takoda a speedy recovery!
