My dog is grieving and moody after a pet died. What can I do to help?

Try getting him out and going places with you if he likes rides. Make play dates with friends who have dogs so he can play and have the company of other dogs. If you are ready, consider adopting another pet so he has a playmate and companionship. Try gently encouraging him to play with you, teach him tricks or get him involved in a group activity like agility. I hope you can find him something to spark his interest and get him engaged again.

If you screen the new dog properly and do a meet and greet, and they all end up being great companions, I think it's a great idea and shows you are thinking ahead. A death of a companion can be very devastating not only for humans but for the other pets in the house. Having another pet around would hopefully distract from and provide some relief when one of your other dogs passes. I think if you are ready for another dog and are willing to take on the financial aspect of it, it's a great idea. Best of luck with you and I hope you have many good years left with all of them.

I'm very sorry you recently lost one of your dogs! It sounds like Bonsai is grieving, and that does happen when they lose a companion. This grieving will pass over time, and he will return to normal. I'm so sorry to hear that Gum lost his partner. That certainly can be difficult for a dog. Adding another dog to the house may certainly be good for him. In general, we recommend that a male and female dog will tend to get along the best if you have your option of genders. Depending on how long it will take you to add another dog to the house, another thing you could consider if needed would be adding a Bach Flower Essence like Rescue Remedy ( http://www.bachflower.com/rescue-remedy-pet/ ) which can be added to the water and help with emotional problems. I'm so sorry for your loss! Pets grieve, just as we do. Try to keep your dog's daily routine as normal as possible, while giving your dog some extra attention and exercise as a distraction. Ultimately, grief takes time to process for our four legged friends, just as it does for us.

I am saddened to hear about the passing of Sami. It's so hard to lose them. Pets do mourn the loss of their pack. Things you can do to help Junior get through this are giving him daily exercise, focus on training and give him lots of attention. Exercise will help to physically tire him out and this will decrease anxiety and help to maintain his appetite. Training will mentally stimulate him and help him to bond closer to you. The attention will help him to be comforted. You really want to focus on decreasing anxiety and keeping him on a routine. I am sure it is very difficult to be going through this. Dogs are emotional and can become distressed / sad when a loved one passes away. Unfortunately, it just takes time.
