My dog has a green pus ear wound. What home remedy can I use?

To Jessica Keay The wound on Buster’s ear is about 2-3 inches long, it’s on the inside part of the ear flap. The pus is greenish, I can’t let him sleep inside the house because I have three small dogs inside. I’m doing my best right now within my budget to care for him while I find him a permanent home. There’s no nearby shelter that will take him because they are over capacity. Technically, I’m all Buster’s got right now. I need the best home remedy to get his ear better, please.

Unfortunately, if you are seeing pus there are no home remedies to fight infection. He likely requires an antibiotic, either topical or systemic. If going to visit a veterinarian is an option, cleaning up the wound as best you can and applying something over-the-counter to the ear is your next best choice. I would also tell you to either obtain an e-collar or make a homemade one (you can view how to do so on a YouTube video, there are several). This will prevent Buster from having any sort of self-mutilation. Ears are very difficult to bandage, particularly to get them to stay on. But, in a situation where a dog is going to be out in the elements, it is critically important to try and prevent worsening infection or even things like maggots. You can find some more YouTube videos on how to best bandage a dog's ear. Since I don't know what ear type (flop, cropped, pointet) your pup has, it is difficult for me to make a video recommendation. Best of luck.

    Unfortunately you will not be able to get any prescription medication for them without seeing a vet. You could get ear cleaner and some topical creams which may help but I would strongly recommend going to a vet for an examination as it sounds like they may need antibiotics. Some vets work for charity clinics or offer payment plans which may help .

Oh my. Poor guy. Unfortunately this ear has a hole through it and is badly infected. He needs to see a doctor for proper care of this ear and prescribed antibiotics as well as have suturing of the laceration. This cannot be treated at home with much success. For now you can try cleaning it with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water to help prevent further infection, but please schedule an appt with your vet right away or if he does no belong to anyone in particular, then he should be surrender to an animal shelter so that they can use their resources there to try and save this pets ear and eye. What to do if my dog has a bleeding, pus-filled wound near his ears?
Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely a hotspot which is a very inflamed focal infection. Usually these occur secondary to allergies, among other possibilities. It is very important to treat these infections appropriately and the sooner they get treated the better for the patient. I recommend that you have Buster evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They are likely going to prescribe anti-inflammatory medications and antibiotics. In the meantime, you can use an e-collar (which you may obtain from your local pet store), to avoid further self trauma by him scratching at it. Good luck and have a good night!

My dog has an ear wound. What home care can I give before a vet?
Although this seems like an easy question to answer, this might actually be complicated. This wound on an ear could be from many things- is he shaking his head because of an ear infection? Is he scratching because of allergies? Has he recently had a rabies vaccine or been ill? You may not be able to treat this wound without finding out about these possible problems. Also, you may need antibiotics, steroids or other special meds to get this to heal. At home, you can keep the area clean, use a warm washcloth to remove the crusting and apply something like Neosporin to the wound. Other than that, you need to see your vet for more diagnostics and treatment.

This presentation could be due to a localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and eventually antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid licking. Hello. I am sure this must hurt, but you do need to try & clean things up the best you can until she is seen by a veterinarian. You can just gently clean the wound with warm water. If you have any skin antiseptic like Hibiclens ( available at all pharmacies ) then clean things up with this. Do not use soap as you will have a tough time getting all the soap out of her coat. Hello. Unfortunately, this type of growth can only be surgically removed by your veterinarian. Until you can plan to have the surgery, try to keep it clean by using warm soapyvwater and dabbing it dry. Dog ear staples: Should I apply Entederm for wound infection?
There is seem to be pus coming from the wound, which would be compatible with an infection. Entederm is a good option, but if the signs do not improve in the next 2-3days a systemic antibiotic would be a better option to avoid any risk of spreading. I would recommend to keep the area clean as well. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths (before applying the antibiotic ointment). Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching (if any).
