Gingivitis in dogs: My dog hates mouth touching. What's the solution?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Greyhound | Female | spayed | 9 years and 6 months old | 62 lbs

I have two rescue greyhounds; one had extensive dental surgery to clean and remove teeth last year. The other has gingivitis and hates anyone touching her mouth. How can I solve this.

Erin should see a vet for her gingivitis. It likely isn't safe for you to try to brush her teeth if she hates it when anyone touches her mouth, so the cleaning should be done by a vet. The vet can sedate her to examined and clean her teeth. As you've seen with your other day, it's important to have gingivitis removed and the teeth cleaned or there is the risk of tooth loss.
