My old dog has painful gums. How can I comfort her without surgery?

Her gums are likely inflamed because she has tartar underneath her gumline. She needs a dental cleaning to scale off all that tartar, then this will resolve the inflammation. I would suggest getting Chia an echocardiogram to see if she can still have surgery despite her heart condition. Many heart disease pets can go under general anesthesia. I would consider getting another vet for a second opinion here and see if you can get Chia's echocardiogram scheduled asap. I hope that your can get Chia's echo and dental scheduled soon. This is very sad, The teeth need to be removed by a vet. There are no over the counter pain medications we can recommend. Those medications are not very safe. If the dog is in that much pain it needs to see a vet. Even if your friend cannot afford the dental cleaning, usually pain medications are not that expensive. I, personally, would be more worried about the infection that is present in the mouth than the pain.

Talk to your vet about doing pulse therapy antibiotics. That is where oral antibiotics are given daily for one week each month. What you are already doing is fine but the antibiotics are what will keep the infection down. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Erin should see a vet for her gingivitis. It likely isn't safe for you to try to brush her teeth if she hates it when anyone touches her mouth, so the cleaning should be done by a vet.
