My dog is on a GI diet. What low-fat treats & how much food?

Yes, this is a great food to give a dog with pancreatitis. It is actually my first choice. I would recommend doing small meals every 4-6 hours and see if your dog can keep that down. If you're feeding the canned food do about 3 tablespoons to start and then slowly increase the amount you are giving him until he is recovered. If you're feeding the dry food do it in half cup increments and then slowly increase the amount you are giving him if he is able to keep it down. Hi and thanks for posting! I would try and stick with low fat treats that contain less than 10 percent fat. Actually, some of the best and healthiest treats are fruits and veggies you may have in your own kitchen! Green beans, carrots, apple bits, and blueberries are all delicious and healthy snacks that Ernie might enjoy. I hope this helps!

If Dove has to receive low fat treats, I would recommend staying away from the commercial stuff in general. While there are likely some commericially available treats out there marketed as more tolerable, you should think about using things like fruits and vegetables, cut up into small pieces to give your pup. These healthy snacks will make Dove equally as happy, I promise! Some things to consider are carrots, apples, green beans, and even some citrus fruits in certain dog's cases. Hope this makes sense.

Poor Henry-pancreatitis is no fun. I don’t usually recommend adding something like this to the diet for animals who suffer these types of severe/chronic conditions. We never know what may cause a flair up. However, if Henry is using a prescription kibble you could check with your vet to see if a canned formulation is available as well. If so you can cut the canned product into little cubes and bake/dehydrate then in the oven to make your own treats! Another option is that most of the companies that manufacture prescription foods also have a range of treats which are labelled for use with various of their prescription diets. Good luck!

Poor guy. It is hard to say what and how you should treat him without running any kind of testing to determine exactly what GI disease he has. Some GI diseases include intestinal parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, lymphoma (cancer of the intestines). There are also some underlying disorders that maninfest through the GI tract which includes: pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, and malabsorption disorders (VIt B deficiency) just to name a few. I am not sure what your pets exact symptoms are but you can try feeding him a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese, added fiber (1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin, not the pie filling, in his food daily), and probiotics (Culturelle over the counter). I would also recommend treating him with a broad spectrum dewormer such as Pyrantel Palmoate or Fenbendazole (Panacur) from your local pet store or feed store. Please feel free to repost your question with more specirics about your pets actual symptoms. I would also encourage you to go outside your local area to find a vet to see him if he does not respond well to the suggestions above. I hope that your pet gets well soon. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Boo Valadez. I recommend discontinuing the majority of the table scraps and treats. This is typically a large source of calories for a small breed dog compared to what it would be for a human. You do not want treats to compromise more than 10% of the calories for the day. So this equates to less than 30 calories for him. I hope this information helps!

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Cosita! There are several diets available that do not require a prescription. Most of these are labeled “light” or “lite”. I recommend Hill’s Science Diet I/D food. You can also consider giving dog-friendly probiotics. If Cosita does not eat, you can offer her some plain boiled chicken and white rice (no bones, skin, or spices) which should be gentle enough on her intestinal tract and low in fat.
