My dog sniffed something. Can he get Giardia from just sniffing?

Hello. Most gastrointestinal disease is spread by the fecal nasal or fecal oral route. This means your dog has to come into actual contact with contaminated feces from the affected dog in order to get sick. By just sniffing & touching you, your dog should be fine, but do consider updating his vaccinations to protect him from other diseases that are out there. A pup is infected with Giardia after ingesting it. Not all puppies have it, but it is a common organism worldwide, especially prevalent where sanitation is sub par. Additionally, it can live in a pup or adult dog without causing outward signs of disease or it can cause symptoms such as diarrhea and lethargy.

I am sorry Jax is not feeling well. Giardia can be spread and is contagious between dogs. If you had a dog at home diagnosed with giardia it is very possible the other dogs have it too. However I would recommend taking them to the vet for confirmation to make sure you are not overlooking another possibilities. Hope that helps

So your dog should be walked in a separate area from the puppy. As long as you prevent that you should be fine. Though it might be best to not bring your dog until the puppy has a confirmed negative stool. People can also get giardia so be careful. Good luck!

Is he eating? Is he acting energetic? If he is eating and acting normally, I wouldn't be too concerned--he's likely getting enough fluids. He's pretty small so it won't necessarily look like much is gone from the bowl. However, if he doesn't want to eat or if he seems to be feeling dumpy, take him to your vet for an exam. No giardia is not that easily spread. Your dogs and cats have natural immunity to parasites as they are healthy. The stray was probably not as healthy and was exposed to giardia in dirty water she had been drinking. If you see mucus in the stool or are worried I would wait a few weeks and then get a fecal test done to rule out giardia. I'm not overly concerned about them getting it and see no reason to worry unless you see changes in the stool. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Mia. Giardia is spread through a fecal oral route. Typically good hygiene and washing your hands thoroughly prohibits this from occurring. I would not let her lick your mouth. Scoop the feces in the yard frequently and wash your hands afterwards. She should stay home from doggie daycare until the infection is resolved.
