Puppy with Giardia won't drink water. How can I get him to drink?

There aren’t any vitamin supplements that I’m aware of that would improve appetite after giardia. You could try offering canned dog food or plain boiled chicken breast with white rice as long as Luna doesn’t have any food sensitivities. If Luna has vomited or is her appetite doesn’t return in the next 24 hours it would be a good idea to recheck with your vet to make sure there is nothing else going on.

Hello. I would not be too concerned. Just continue to add water, or low sodium broth to his food. You can also offer him broth or stock ( either beef or chicken ) as a source of liquids. If Woody is eating wet food I wouldn't be too concerned about him not drinking much. There is a lot of water in wet food. If he is lethargic, not eating or has any other systmes then it would be a concern that I would recommend a veterinarian. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Poor girl. Giardia can very well be the cause, but it can’t be confirmed without a Giardia test done through your vet. Other possible causes of dereased appetite, diarrhea and vomiting is parvovirus (if Khaleesi isn’t fully vaccinated) or a bacterial infection. I would definitely take her in to your vet at this point since it seems to be a continued issue that isn’t resolving with a conservative bland diet. The most concerning symptom right now is the fact that she doesn’t want to eat. I would recommend taking her in right away. If you can’t get her in until morning, you can try offering Khaleesi slightly warmed cans of baby food (meats and vegetables) to see if that will entice her to eat and give her some much needed nutrition. He may have intestinal parasites, an upset stomach or a more serious viral infection. In the meantime, continue to offer him and water and try hand feeding him. As for the soft stool, it doesn’t look abnormal enough for me to be terribly concerned. Call and let your surgeon know but in general, if Lou is eating and happy, a little soft stool is no big deal. This depends on a lot of factors including if she is otherwise exhibiting any symptoms of sickness, if she is eating canned food which already has water in it, how much water she is actually having, among other things. If she is not drinking anything especially if having other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and/or lethargy, she should be evaluated as soon as possible to prevent dehydration and to investigate the cause. If she is otherwise doing well and is eating canned food, it would be ok to monitor her for another 12-24 hours and if not improved to have her evaluated by a veterinarian then. Hopefully she returns to normal and there is no need for a veterinary visit. Have a great day!
