How to tell if my dog's gastropexy failed after stomach bloat surgery?

Hello. Most of these surgeries heal without any problems, but if Foxy were to stop eating &/or start vomiting food & water, this is of great concern & she should be examined quickly. For some reason the x-ray did not post to your question. Bloat with volvulus (turning of the stomach) causes massive vomiting, decreased appetite, lack of proper stool, and also shows up pretty clearly on an x-ray, so please try to repost this to verify. In some cases the pets stomach can be untwisted without surgery. However, I would still consider having the surgery to tack her stomach in the near future to prevent her stomach from twisting again. Hello, sorry to hear about Ferris. In dogs that develop and bloat, they will show signs of open mouth breathing, non-productive retching as if trying to vomit, severe abdominal pain, and bloated/distended abdomen. These signs don't generally subside without emergency intervention that requires surgery. If Ferris is now comfortable and sleeping then its likely she does not have a bloat especially after drinking water and keeping it down. However, it cannot be determined without getting her evaluated, so if Ferris continues to have the signs you saw initially, then I would indeed get her evaluated soon. Seven isn't too old for surgery, there are dogs who have successful surgery that are even older than Penny. You can have a gastopexy done on her. There are the typically risks of surgery such as infection, excessive bleeding, and in rare cases, death. Your vet can explain the risks to you. Before doing surgery, I strongly recommend having blood work and a urinalysis done to make sure that everything is functioning normally. I hope this helps!

From your description, it sounds as though your dog had a gastric dilitation volvulus (GDV) or 'bloat.' This is where the stomach flips upon itself. it is a life threatening condition that requires surgery in attempt to fix. Sometimes, the signs that occur when this first happens can be subtle and it goes unnoticed for some time before being treated. When the 'flip' happens, it causes a large amount of inflammation that the body must contend with and unfortunately, a good outcome doesn't always happen. It sounds like you did everything you could for your pet. Of course, it is hard to know tell what happened for sure based on your description. Since you are asking this question a year later, you may still be grieving. It may be of benefit to speak to the veterinarian who took care of Patch to discuss what happened. There are also counselors who work with grief over pet loss in your area that also may be of benefit to you.

These signs may be compatible with a bloat and gastric torsion, even though now there are none showing (they can restart again). I would recommend an immediate check up as this disease represents an emergency and can lead to fatal consequences.
