My dog is gassy after starting trazodone. Is this a side effect?

I am afraid, this could indeed be a side effect of Trazodone. The manufacturer lists the following possible side effectsÆ Trazodone Side Effects in Dogs Lethargy, Sedation, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Panting, Hyperactivity, Shaking, Restlessness. Hi there. I would be concerned with Hershey developing serotonin syndrome with concurrent use of trazadone and fluoxetine especially if you are giving them together often. It has to do with how the drugs are metabolized in the body and what receptors they work on. Side effects can be as you have listed, as with diarrhea, labored fast breathing, etc. I would try calling your doctor to discuss changing the dosages or weaning off the trazadone altogether. Trazodone can cause vomiting and diarrhea, but these signs would typically be seen shortly after the pill was given. Some dogs will develop diarrhea and even vomiting secondary to stress so it’s possible that the fireworks were the trigger. As long as the diarrhea has resolved and you’re not seeing any more vomiting you can probably just continue to monitor her, but otherwise you should see your vet. You also may want to ask about a different sedative for the future.

Hyperactivity can be a side effect of Trazodone. Here is an information sheet about this drug and list of the side effects. While it's possible that this was related to the trazodone causing sedation, this is a relatively low dose for a dog her size and I would think you would have seen signs sooner. It is possible that she had some hip pain. Other causes of uncoordinated movement would include a neurologic problem like a seizure, or certain toxins. If she seems to be her normal self again I think it would be safe to try another dose of trazodone during the day when you can monitor closely (check with your vet first). If she is still not walking normally or seems painful I'd recommend having her examined by your vet.

We certainly can see some dogs that will take in extra air into their GI tract when they have anesthesia, but it would be very odd for that extra gas to last for 2 weeks. I think the answer partially depends on the time frame. If the gas started when you transitioned back from I/D to the regular diet, I wonder if the transition was a little too fast for Baby Girl. In general, The Honest Kitchen is a wonderful company and the digestive supplement is good for any GI upset or soft stool, but it does have some fiber in it, so if Baby Girl is sensitive to increased levels of fiber, then that could certainly cause extra gas. I think the easiest test would be to stop the Gastrointestinal Supplement for a few days and see if the gas improves. If not, then you may need to look at her diet. Good luck! As long as Romeo is eating well, not vomiting and his energy level is high, there is nothing to worry about. Trazadone can produce gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, increased appetite but it is not known to cause less frequent defecation or constipation in dogs.
