My dog is gassy. Can I feed her a limited ingredient diet long-term?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Being a smaller dog, he May not necessarily be getting bored with his kibble. Smaller dogs can be quite picky and selective about what they eat. Especially if they've already been introduced to flavorful dog treats and/or people food. For itchy skin I like Natural Balance LID (Limited Ingredient Diet). The Organix wet food you fed may have been the 3.5oz stew bowl and those may be too rich for Cookie. So you could try just the 12.7 oz cans instead of go with Natural Balance LID dry and wet.

If this is the only sign you could try changing to a highly digestible diet (like Hill’s i/d or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Low Fat) as long as she doesn’t have any food intolerances or diseases requiring a therapeutic diet. Sometimes I also have people try a probiotic like Fortiflora. If she has also had a decrease in appetite, diarrhea or weight loss you should see your veterinarian.

In general yes. You do need to make sure to get the Puppy version of this diet to support his growth appropriately if you are going to feed it long term. Your veterinarian should be able to help you find it. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

Hello. This much gas is of concern, but it is not an indication that nutrients are not being utilized. Hills i/d is a high fiber food, and the intestinal bacteria may just be trying to adjust to the new diet. This might take several weeks. If the gas production is still overwhelming, I might try one of the hypoallergenic diets like the Prescription Diet z/d & see if this helps with the gas. Always remember to take your time to when switching diets taking 4-10 days to completely change over from the old to the new food. Hope this helps Oscar's little problem. The reason is that most dogs are very sensitive to diet changes and it is best to stick with one good high quality balanced diet longterm instead of switching them frequently. Some examples of high quality balanced diets include Purina Pro Plan and Science Diet foods. Once you are feeding a balanced and complete diet, there is no need to add other ones or switching them. This will avoid the gastrointestinal issues that would come with changing diets on a regular basis. Good luck and have a great day!
