My dog has gas and runny poop. Should I fast him for colitis?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 11 months old | 23 lbs

Lou had really bad gas a few days ago and gagged once but not vomiting or diarrhea but today his poop was runny and thin still formed not water. he had stress induced colitis in November and I’m pretty sure again in December after travel for the holiday but I fasted him for 24 hrs then fed bland chicken for a few days adding a little of his Purina pro plan sensitive skin and stomach in. Now he’s still playing wanting food & water should I start a fast to maybe catch it before it gets bad

Hello, sorry to hear abut Lou. Indeed this may be a flare up of his colitis and a bland diet may help rest his GI tract enough so that he doesn't have a full episode of colitis. A fast should not be necessary if he is eating ok.

Ultimately, it sounds like Lou may have intermittent GI sings long term and he may benefit from a diet trial, prophylactic medications and probiotics to improve her overall, longterm GI health.

Hope this helps and best of luck.
