Dog gagging after accidental antibiotic dose. Should I take her to vet?

I'm very sorry you are dealing with this. At this point, you should discuss quality of life issues with your veterinarian. Friday may be able to get an antibiotic injection that, hopefully, would not cause stomach upset. If your veterinarian is unavailable due to the holiday, consider a visit to the local veterinary ER. After an exam, the vet on staff could recommend a different antibiotic or an injection.

Hello and thank you for your post! Speaking from personal experience, this used to happen to my dog as well. I would give him his capsule and sometimes it would get stuck under his lip and it would partially dissolve releasing the powder in his mouth. He would shake his head and foam at the mouth because of how bitter the powder was. He never got sick because of this and the powder generally will not cause any irritation it is just very bitter and distasteful. I would think that the antibiotic itself would be causing him to feel sick if he managed to swallow some of the antibiotic on an empty stomach. It is also possible that it has nothing to do with the medication that was administered and is completely something else that has led to him feeling sick. Since you have an appointment with your veterinarian, I would wait and see what the physical examination shows and possibly have Joel's blood tested. I hope this helps! Poor Mac! I recommend to call his veterinarian who may ask to see him again or may recommend medications. It possible the antibiotic has upset his tummy but it’s also possible something else is going on. You can switch his diet to boiled white meat chicken and plain boiled white rice for the next few days. If he continues to be sick, he should see his veterinarian. It is possible that these symptoms are unrelated to the antibiotics, but you definitely did the right thing by stopping to give them to her. You can monitor her throughout the night, and offer water only. If you are concerned that Stormy is getting worse throughout the night, you can have her evaluated by an emergency vet. I hate to hear that Jersey is not feeling well. I do think the continuing diarrhea and regurgitation do indicate that she did not respond like she should have to the antibiotic. No knowing her full history, its hard to say what could be causing it but in puppies, parasites including Giardia are very common. You can also see infections in the GI tract, chronic foreign in bodies, organ dysfunction and food allergy as other causes. If Jersey is acting normal, has a good energy level and normal pink gums, I would recommend to make an appointment with her normal veterinarian to discuss next steps. The doctor may recommend a special diet, bloodwork and/or radiographs to start trying to figure out what is going on. She or he may also recommend special parasite testing depending on where you live. Feed Jersey small amounts of boiled white breast chicken meat and white rice. Make sure she is drinking water and keep her in a cool, comfortable area. If Jersey seems to be uncomfortable, has pale gums, seems weak or in distress, then you should go to the emergency clinic. Use your best judgement. I hope she starts feeling better asap!

It is possible that she could be having a sensitivity to the antibiotic or this could be another complication to her upset tummy. I would make sure you are feeding her a complete meal then wait 15-20 minutes befor giving her the antibiotics. Also you may want to try feeding her only plain chicken (no bones) and rice as This is bland and easy on the tummy for recovery. If This doesn’t help then I would talk to your vet about a recheck. Your vet may want to give her an anti-nausea medicine, change her antibiotics or take X-rays if indicated. I hope this helps!
